I PROCLAWITIONS ISSUED. <br />PRO CWlATI ON <br />WHEREAS, Edina volunteers are a vital resource in solving some of the human pro- <br />blems that are a consequence of our comples society; and <br />TJHEREAS, volunteers, through their demonstrated concern and commitment to the well- <br />being of others, prove assurance for the continuing high quality of life in the <br />City of Edina; and <br />WHEREAS, volunteers represent all ages, economic, education and ethnic backgrounds; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, volunteering provides opportunities for personal growth, career explora- <br />tion and civic contribution for every citizen; and <br />b WHEREAS, recognition should be given to individual volunteers for their contri- <br />butions to the health, education, welfare, recreation and cultural services .to the <br />City of Edina; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, C. Wayne Courtney, Mayor of the City of Edina, Minnesota, do <br />hereby proclaim the week of April 27 through May 5, 1981, as <br />MINNESOTA VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION WEEK <br />in the City of Edina; <br />IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have set my hand and caused the seal .of the City of Edina <br />to be affixed this 20th day of April, 1981. <br />The Mayor read the following Proclamations: <br />BICYCLE SAFETY PEEK <br />WHEREAS, the week of April 20 thru'Apri1 26, 1981, is lcnown as National Bicycle - I- Week; and <br />WHEREAS, this is the 16th year in which various interested civic groups have con- <br />ducted an Annual Edina Bicycle Safety Program in cooperation with the Edina <br />Citizens ' Safety Council; and <br />TJHEREAS, the purpose of this program is to reduce the hazards of bicycle riding <br />for young bicyclists, as well as for pedestrians and motorists; and <br />WHEREAS, the growing congestion of-our streets and highways daily increases the <br />dangers for the careless or unskilled rider and the hundreds of deaths and thous- <br />ands of injuries each year throughout our nation have alerted us to the need for <br />such a program; and <br />WHEREAS, by training our boys and girls at an early age in proper riding skills, <br />by teaching them the laws governing bicyclists, by explaining the reasons for' <br />obeying safety rules, and by helping them to be aware of the hazards of biking, <br />Edina is making a concerted attempt to assure that the number of accidents does <br />not keep up with the ever increasing number of bicyclists; and <br />WHEREAS, the safety of our children cannot be relegated to a once-a-year campaign; <br />NOV, THEREFORE, I, C. WAYNE COURTNEY, Mayor of the City of Edina, do call for the <br />support of every parent in carrying out this campaign all year long and do urge <br />every youngster to participate in this 16th Bicycle Safety Program and then to <br />practice what he has learned for his om safety as well as for the safety of <br />others. <br />IJHEREAS, Project Concern of Minnesota, Inc., has promoted community involvement in <br />Minnesota for twelve years; and <br />VIEREAS, Pro j ect Concern of Minnesota, Inc . , has promoted the Walk for Mankind <br />involving over 76,000 youths in Minnesota; and <br />WHEREAS, Project Concern of Minnesota, Inc., shall set aside the week of April <br />25 through May 2, 1981, to promote the Walk for Mankind and educate the community <br />in the problems of poverty; and <br />WHEREAS, Project Concern of Minnesota, Inc., provides health care to 40 clinics <br />around the world and in the U.S . ; and <br />WHEREAS, their motto is "Feed a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man <br />to fish, you feed him for a lifetime"; <br />NOW, TKEREFORE, I, C.
