<br />Answering rollcall were Members Bredesen, Richards, Schmidt, Turner and Mayor
<br />EDINA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' TENNIS TEAM COMMENDED.
<br />Eigh School Girls' Tennis Team and offered the following resolution which was unani-

<br />RESOLUTION OF COMMENDATION
<br />EDINA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' TENNIS TEAM
<br />WHEREASj the Edina Girls' Tennis Team won the Region 6AA. Team Championship, the
<br />Region 6AA 1st and 2nd Singles Championship, and the Region 6AA Doubles Championship,
<br />WHEREAS, the Edina Girls' Tennis Team established an enviable record in the State
<br />Tournament bpwinning-the Singles Championship,. the Doubles Championship and the Team
<br />Championship , and
<br />WHEREAS, success &':the State Tournament has been the result of their extra ordinary
<br />ability, hours of practice and. dedication to the sport;
<br />NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Edina City-Council that sincere congratulations
<br />be extended to members of the team; Kelly. .hderson, Laura Bassinger , Lea Blacklgell,
<br />Martha Goldberg; 'Ginger Helgeson, Stacy Husebo, Jennifer Nelson, Carrie Odland, and
<br />Sarah Olson, and to their coaches Ted Greer and Bruce Clarke, to Athletic Directors
<br />Bud Bjerken and Sara Lykken, to'Principa1 James L. Cabalka and to Superintendent of
<br />Schools Dr. Ralph Lieber;
<br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be entered into the Minutes
<br />.Book of the Edina City Council and that appropriate copies be given to members of
<br />the -team.

<br />YOUTH APPRECIATION %EEK AND MIERICAN EDUCATION MEEK PROCLAIMED. >layor Coartney
<br />presented the following proclamations:
<br />WHEREAS, the vast majority of youth are conc'csmed, knowledgeable and responsible
<br />citizens; and -. .
<br />WHEREAS, the accomplishments and achievements of these young citizens deserve
<br />recognition and praise of their elders; and
<br />.. WHEREAS, Optimists International has, since 1954, developed and promoted the program
<br />entitled Youth AppreciatiGn Week; and
<br />WHEREAS, the cit5zens of the City of' Edina have indicated a desire to join with
<br />the Optimists in expressing appreciation and approval of the contributions of the
<br />youth, the City Council of the City of Edina does, therefore, proclaim the second
<br />week in November as I -.

<br />WHEREAS, teachers mold the minds-of future citizens, and the schools represent the
<br />best efforts of the community, the state, and the nation to improve the quality
<br />of life; and
<br />WHEREAS, teachers are dedicated to preparing students for a better life, and defining
<br />the schools' goals and evaluating their results are the responsibilities of an in-
<br />formed and involved citizenry; and
<br />WHEREAS, there is a widespread need for better communication and more cooperative
<br />relationships between professional educators and the coqmunity; and
<br />WHEREAS, these concerns.are r.ef1ecte.d in the 1983 theme - A Strong Nation Needs
<br />Strong Public Schools - .a theme> that suits our state;
<br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, C. Wayne Courtney, Mayor of the City of Edina, do hereby proclaim
<br />the week of November 13 through November 19, 1983, to be
<br />AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK
<br />in Edina, . .
<br />FURTHER, I urge citizens to reaffirm their commitment to improving education on all
<br />levels, and to translate.-that commitment into action by visiting and otherwise
<br />supporting our local schools.
<br />JUNE REGAN COMMENDED FOR SERVICE TO CITY.
<br />introduced June Regan,rAssessing Department Secretary, and advised that she has been
<br />employed with the City since June of 1966, noting that during the first 15 years of
<br />employment she did not. ..take's day of sick leave. Her responsibilities include
<br />receiving collection on spkcial assessments, handling divisions of properties, -
<br />abatements and other clerical duties.
