Neal, City Manager
RE: Proposed Sportsdome Project
The City Council's July 19 Work Session will be devoted to the discussion of the proposed sportsdome
project. The advocacy group for the project, led by Edina residents Shannon Rusk and Paige Rickert, will
present the Council with background information about the proposed project. They have a short power
point presentation that shows potential sites for the project and describes the operations of a domed
athletic facility.
I met with representatives of the advocacy group this week to clarify what they are asking of the City
Council. There are several answers to that question. The group is not asking the City Council to approve
or authorize such a project to be built. The plans for the project are still only in their conceptual
phase. The group is not asking the City Council to select a site for the proposed project. The process of
developing this project has not advanced to the point where a site has been selected for it. The group is
not asking the City Council to finance the project. While the group advocating for the project can
discuss how similar projects are financed, the proposed project in Edina has not advanced to the point
where detailed finances are available. The advocacy group is asking for the City Council to partner with
it to evaluate the feasibility and advisability of developing a domed athletic facility in Edina. They want
the Council to authorize City staff to participate in the evaluation team.
There are several options the Council could consider for a response to the project advocates:
1. The City is not interested in partnering with the advocacy group to evaluate the feasibility of the
proposed facility.
2. The City is interested in partnering with the advocacy group to evaluate the feasibility of the
proposed facility.
3. The City is interested in partnering with the advocacy group, with conditions, to evaluate the
feasibility of the proposed facility.
4. The City is interested in evaluating the feasibility of the proposed facility as a public facility
without partnering with the advocacy group.
City Hall
4801 WEST 50TH STREET
EDINA, MINNESOTA, 55424 -1394
www.CityofEdina.com
952 - 927 -8861
FAX 952 - 826 -0390
TTY 952 - 826 -0379
