July 12, 1952 In the matter of the extension of John Street, Edina, Minnesota, one block sc&zthward from Belmore Road to Maloney Avenue, the present residents on 'John 8treet are requested to express their' opinions. Angus W. and a residents at 315 John Street Cla ke , joint owners and r s , are Eleanor C . r opened u of the opinion that if the new block of John Street is o p p, it should not ,.be c t" through; at ita northern end ( Belmore Lane to connect with -the pryben :block of John Street. Aside :from the facet that carrying the street through at its north end would necitate exavagant filling -in of low, wet land; aside from the impinge- ment or encroachment of any such cut - through upon the pv" rty of Archie E. Dion at the junction of Belmore and John, the Clarkes feel that such cutting through would be a liability rather than an asset to the neighborhood, both for the present owner- residents and for the future residents of the new block who are at present, of course, unable to express their opinions on the matter. Maintenance of dead -end and other short, non - through streets is highly de- sirable in a residential neighborhood of this sort, especially where there are many children. On the present single block of John Street alone there are 13 children, 8 of them under school age, and a few houses in either direction on Belmore more than doubles the number. Residents in the new block will have eminently satisfactory access to their properties through Maloney Avenue. Their own block would enjoy an elimina- tion of through traffic if not cut through. And at present, between Blake and John on`Maloney, where the new.residents travel, there are no houses at all to suffer imposition of the added traffic. The arrangement of the Dion property and the probability of the owner's continued resistance to the cutting through of John Street at its northern end; the fact that the street could not be a straight one even if cut through; and the _overall unlik9lihood,_of the street's being cut through at this time reduce the need for this.expression of. opinion. Now, however, when John Street's second block is petitioned for opening from the south end, is the logical time for present owners and residents to go on record concerning this matter. I i Aiwa_ OWNER RESIDENT ._ 4 /l ' v BELIEVE JOHN SHOULD BE STREET AT NORTH END SHOULD NOT BE CUT THRU V t August 5th, 1952. lufu f f Gretchen S.Alden, Deputy Villa -e Clerk. Dear Gretchen: Mr. Angus Clark called regarding the petition for not cutting through St. Johns Street. Please advise what the status is on this petition, at the present time, and call him at Main 5225, Ext. 270. Also, advise me what the status is. SIN: B Yours very t ruly, S. R. Mitchell Village Manager. Mr. M - The Minutes of July lk continued Hearing on Grading of John St. to Monday, August 11. The Minutes of August 11, state as follows: "Mr. Lund asked about his p etition on John Street from Belmore Lane to Maloney Avenue. He owns six lots and Mr. Dione owns the rest of the block. Discus :ion had about the grade. Bower Hawthorne suggested that Mr. Lund and Mr. Mitchell work out the grade. Mr. Deione mentioned that there are many trees involved. Mr. Lund was told to get a dedication of the land for a turnaround." From these last minutes, it would appear that there will not be a complete cut - through of this street. If this is right, let me know, and I'll so inform Mr. Clark. GSA
