Fire damages unit in multifamily building
Edina, Minn., Feb. 27, 2015 – The Edina Fire Department was called to the 3400 block of Heritage Drive
at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, after receiving an alert from a fire alarm.
Fire crews arrived to discover flames showing from inside a building’s laundry room. Firefighters were able to
quickly extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers. Damage to the unit was moderate because firefighters had
to access a wall where the fire spread. No injuries were reported.
The fire was caused from built-up lint in a dryer vent. According to the National Fire Protection Association,
the leading cause of home clothes dryer and washer fires is a failure to clean them annually.
“The best way to prevent a lint fire is to have the dryer vents cleaned once a year,” said Fire Marshal Jeff
Siems. “The vents should be cleaned from the dryer all the way to where the exhaust vent pipe meets the
outdoors.”
Other tips to prevent laundry room fires are:
Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional.
Do not use the dryer without a lint filter.
Make sure you clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry. Remove lint that has collected
around the drum.
Keep dryers in good working order. Gas dryers should be inspected by a professional to make sure
that the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks.
Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer.
Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed.
The Edina Fire Department received mutual aid from Richfield and St. Louis Park Fire departments.
