FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City Seeks Youth Applicants for Boards and Commissions
Edina, Minn., April 16, 2015 – The City of Edina will soon have 16 student seats open on its eight advisory
boards and commissions. The Arts & Culture Commission, Community Health Commission, Energy &
Environment Commission, Heritage Preservation Board, Human Rights & Relations Commission, Park Board,
Planning Commission and Transportation Commission will each have two open seats for the 2015-2016 term.
With the exception of the Planning Commission, boards and commissions meet once per month. Student
members of boards or commissions serve for one year and do not have voting privileges. Project Coordinator
MJ Lamon stresses what a fantastic opportunity this is for young people in Edina. “The Board and Commission
student program is an opportunity for young residents to volunteer for their community while learning more
about local government and civic engagement,” she said, encouraging any student who is interested to apply.
Applications will be accepted May 1-29. Candidates will be interviewed. Those appointed by the City Council
will begin their year-long term Sept. 1. Youth board and commission members must be Edina residents, but do
not have to attend Edina High School. Most candidates are high school juniors or seniors. Existing student
members may apply for reappointment.
