Edina Police Warn Against Risk of Dog Flu
Edina, Minn., April 30, 2015 – The Edina Police Department warns local dog owners of the potential risk of
their pets contracting the highly contagious canine influenza (dog flu) that has been the cause of several pet
deaths across the Midwest. So far, there have been no reports of the flu strain in Minnesota, but it is possible
for the virus to make its way to this area before the strain dissipates.
Dog flu is described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a contagious respiratory
disease in dogs caused by specific Type A influenza viruses known to infect dogs. There are two influenza A
viruses, the H3N8 virus and H3N2 virus. No human canine influenza infections have ever been reported.
The virus is spread through direct contact with coughing and sneezing infected dogs and through contaminated
objects like fabrics and hard surfaces. Although all dogs are susceptible to the infection, those with the highest
risk are those dogs that congregate in common areas, such as kennels, shelters and dog parks. The virus can
also be transferred to cats.
The best way to protect your dog from this virus is to limit its contact with other dogs at places where pets
gather and to limit nose-to-nose contact between unknown dogs. There is an approved vaccine against the
H3N8 strain. Speak to your veterinarian regarding preventative treatments before your pet begins showing any
symptoms. If your dog has a cough or is showing signs of respiratory disease, do not expose your pet to other
dogs and schedule an appointment with your veterinarian so they can perform the appropriate tests.
