Edina Art Center to host nationally known potter for three days
Edina, Minn., April 27, 2015 – Nationally known potter Bill van Gilder will present a three-day workshop
in May at the Edina Art Center. A reception and presentation will be held 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 15. The
artist will conduct an in-depth workshop 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17.
Bill van Gilder has had a distinguished career in pottery. van Gilder has been a professional potter for more
than 45 years. He began his career at age 15, apprenticed in England and Ireland, and received a degree from
the Harrow School of Art in London. He managed two large pottery training centers in Lesotho and
Swaziland in Southern Africa. van Gilder returned to the United States in 1979 and established a studio and
gallery atop South Mountain in central Maryland where he continues to work today. He has written a teaching
column for Clay Time Magazine. He also created, wrote and hosted the internationally televised DIY Network
Television series “Throwing Clay.”
During the two-day demo workshop, more than 50 pottery making techniques will be demonstrated in
answer to ‘how-to’ questions. Participants are welcome to take photos, and are encouraged to bring a
notebook. A discussion about glazes, including cone 6 to cone 10, oxidation, reduction, soda and salt will take
place during the workshop.
