Fire-Rescue & Inspections Department Works to Inform
Residents of Fireworks Safety
Edina, Minn., June 1, 2015 – The Fire-Rescue & Inspections Department is working to inform residents of
safe and legal ways to partake in Fourth of July festivities, while still letting some celebrate with a “bang.”
“We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July celebration,” said Fire Marshal Jeff Siems. “All
and all, most people are responsible and do the right thing, but we want to make sure everyone celebrates
safely.”
The State of Minnesota allows for the public sale, possession and use of some -- but not all -- fireworks.
Fireworks may not be used on public property, such as in parks.
Siems highlighted some key safety instructions for residents using fireworks:
Have at least on supervisor present, one of whom is not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Always read, understand and follow all instructions.
Choose a safe place that is a not near anything that could start on fire or be damaged.
Once the firework is extinguished, dispose of it in a pail of water with a shovel to ensure safety.
“For the most part, the City has not had trouble [with fireworks] in the past,” Siems said. “Use common
sense and be aware of your surroundings.”
Police will enforce the sale, possession and use of fireworks -- especially as July 4 draws near. The Fire-Rescue
& Inspections and Police departments will respond to complaints and confiscate all illegal fireworks.
