Edina Fire Reminds Residents to Make Evacuation Plans
Edina, Minn., Aug. 3, 2015 – The Edina Fire Department reminds residents to craft and practice evacuation
plans.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, five out of six fire deaths happen in the home. Having
an evacuation plan dramatically improves the likelihood for safe escape during an emergency.
“Having an evacuation plan in place to respond to emergency situations can make the difference between life
and death,” said Fire Chief Tom Schmitz. “The sure way to increase your chances to respond appropriately to
any emergency is to develop a plan and practice that plan. Having an evacuation plan and practicing that plan
with everyone involved is the key to your success in a time of emergency.”
Edina Fire Department staff teaches evacuation plans and emergency procedures to schools around the city,
as well as organizations and Early Childhood Family Education classes during Fire Prevention Month in
October.
“Evacuation plans are not only important for kids,” said Fire Inspector Brian Hanrahan. “Everybody benefits
from having a plan when an emergency arises.”
Classes on how to make an evacuation plan are available through Early Childhood Family Education
throughout the year. Visit www.edinaschools.org to sign up or learn when classes are available.
