Fire damages Edina home on Zenith Avenue
Edina, Minn., Oct. 23, 2015 – The Edina Fire Department was called to the 5800 block of Zenith Avenue
at 7:58 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, after receiving reports from a passerby of a bush on fire.
Fire crews arrived to discover a small working house fire near the front door. While the fire was mostly
contained to the exterior front wall, there was minor smoke damage to the inside home. The occupants were
not home at the time of the fire, but two dogs were rescued from the structure. There were no injuries.
The probable cause of the fire is carelessly discarded smoking materials.
“It’s important to make sure smoking materials are completely extinguished and disposed of properly,” said
Fire Inspector Brian Hanrahan.
Below are some tips from U.S. Fire Administration on how to properly discard smoking materials:
Put cigarettes out all the way. Do this every time. Put water on the ashes and butts to make sure
they are really out before you put them in the trash.
Be alert. Do not smoke after taking medicine that makes you tired. You may not be able to prevent or
escape from a fire if you are sleepy or have taken medicine that makes you tired.
Never smoke around medical oxygen. Medical oxygen can explode if a flame or spark is near. Even if
the oxygen is turned off, it can still catch on fire.
Never smoke in bed. Mattresses and bedding can catch on fire easily. Do not smoke in bed because
you might fall asleep with a lit cigarette.
Put your cigarette out in an ashtray or bucket with sand. Use ashtrays with a wide base so they
won’t tip over and start a fire.
