Murals and plaques illustrate the Arena’s past. For some, Braemar Arena is a place to play and watch hockey. For others, it is a place to figure skate for fun or competition. But for all who enter the spacious complex, it’s a place of character, smiling faces and a great time. The Village of Edina constructed Braemar Arena with one sheet of ice in 1965, after solidifying an agreement with nine school districts in the Lake Conference, the Braemar-City of Lakes Figure Skating Club and the youth hockey program. The Arena was the sixth indoor refrigerated ice arena EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT 2015 Fall Activities Directory in the Twin Cities, serving as the home rink for all Lake Conference games. “The Minneapolis City of Lakes Figure Skating Club (now the Braemar-City of Lakes Figure Skating Club) was asked to relocate to the newly built Braemar Arena in Edina,” said President of the Braemar- City of Lakes Figure Skating Club Sharon Friedli-Welter. “Braemar Arena is home. Generations of skaters now bring their children back to Braemar Arena to figure skate and play hockey.” Braemar Arena has undergone several additions over the years. “The Arena has made many improvements and additions since its beginning, but with every improvement, it has been important to maintain the character, the original feel,” said General Manager Susie Miller, who has worked for Edina for 17 years. The Pavilion — better known as “the Pav” — was built in the early ‘70s. It was constructed with tin walls for use in the winter. It served as a community gathering place in the summer, when it was transformed into an open pavilion. The Pavilion took its final form in 1987 as an enclosed, indoor arena — known today as the East Arena. “I recall coaching my kids and others on both girls’ and boys’ youth teams for the entire decade of the 1990s,” said former President of the Edina Hockey Association and current board member of the Edina Historical Society Bruce Carlson. “I continue to be reminded of how blessed we are as a community to have such an incredible facility, that has now grown to four rinks.” The South Arena was constructed in 1997 to accommodate growing programs. In 2012, the Hornets Nest opened after $800,000 in donations was raised by the community. The most recent addition to Braemar Arena is the Backyard Rink, which was completed last year. “The City of Edina is extremely fortunate to have a facility like Braemar Arena. Since it was originally built 50 years ago, Braemar has remained one of the premier ice arenas in the state,” said current President of the Edina Hockey Association Mike DeVoe. “Having such a great facility at our disposal has most certainly been a contributing factor to Edina’s hockey success. Braemar Arena is a special place that holds a lot of great memories for a long list of talented teams and players over the last 50 years.” Braemar Arena will celebrate its 50th anniversary through a variety of events. A few highlights include an Edina Historical Society exhibit illustrating the Arena’s eventful history from 9 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Nov. 26. On Saturday, Dec. 5, all four high school teams will play from 1 to 9 p.m. There will also be youth games and alumni scrimmages throughout the day. The Figure Skating Club’s annual holiday show will be held 4–6 p.m. Dec. 6. “The history and legacy of those before us has created such an incredible atmosphere for any hockey fanatic, player or fan,” said Edina native Dean Williamson. “We will never forget all the memories and life-long friends we made along the way.” For more information, contact Miller at 952-833-9502 or visit www.BraemarArena.com. The Parks & Recreation Department has new online registration software. You must create a new account before registering for any programs. CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY All refund requests will be assessed a $5 administrative fee. Full refunds are given only when a program or reservation is canceled by the Parks & Recreation Department. No refunds will be given for cancellations requested less than five business days prior to the start of a program or reservation. Under the discretion of the Parks & Recreation Director, partial credit will be considered if cancellation is due to injury or serious illness. CONFIRMATION Program confirmation is usually sent one week before your class begins. If the program is full, you are given the option of being placed on a waiting list. FINANCIAL AID Several civic organizations have contributed to the Edina Challenge Fund at the Edina Community Foundation, which supports the Grant-In-Aid Program. The redesigned range is more than 300 yards long and will accommodate up to 58 golfers at one time. New target greens will be added and a new irrigation system will improve turf conditions and will reduce maintenance and repairs by staff. The Executive Course has been redesigned and rerouted to offer nine par 3 holes with yardages ranging from 72 yards to 191 yards. To make the course more enjoyable for kids and entry-level golfers, the course has been reconfigured to minimize sand hazards and forced carries over wetlands. All of the greens, tees and bunkers will be reconstructed and the fairways will be re-grassed to improve turf quality and to provide a more consistent experience for golfers. The proposed greens have been enlarged to allow for two flags on each green — similar to the experience at Fred Richards Executive Golf Course. Raku is a firing process developed in 16th century Japan for the Japanese tea ceremony. Coffee and pastries will be provided in the morning. This is a three-day, hands-on Cone 6 glaze-testing workshop designed to show students how to test a base recipe and get various colors. On Friday, we will prepare test tiles with a base glaze and 10 colorant variations. We will fire on Saturday in the Cone 6 electric kilns and then on Sunday, we will discuss the results when they are unloaded from the kiln. The workshop will also be a general overview of ceramic glazes, focusing on, but not limited to, Cone 6 glazes. We will discuss cones, kilns, firing dynamics and principles, as well as applying those principles to various firing cycles. This will lead us into some basic classifications of glazes, like ash, celadon and temmoku. It will be conducted in a casual question-and-answer format that will drive the content of the weekend. Glazes will be discussed in a practical and easy-to-understand dialogue designed to help potters gain an understanding of glazes, firing and glazing. We will discuss how and why each type of glaze works and how you can achieve them, how to adjust your glazes and how to find new ones. We will discuss glazes from John’s new book, The Complete Guide to Mid-Range Glazes: Glazing and Firing at Cone 4-7, but will go into more detail than the book allowed.
