Earth Hour Proclamation
Whereas, all people and cultures are dependent on a healthy environment for a safe and
fulfilling life; and
Whereas, the burning of fossil fuels to produce energy is one of the major contributors to rising
temperatures and levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, causing rapid climate change in
Minnesota and around our planet; and
Whereas, electric lights account for a great deal of energy use; and
Whereas, Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million individuals and
more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate
change. Earth Hour, organized by WWF, had become a global sustainability movement with
more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, James B. Hovland, Mayor of the City of Edina, do hereby proclaim 8:30 to
9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011 as:
Earth Hour In Edina
The Edina City Council asks that all the residents, schools, churches and businesses in Edina turn
off their lights (where safe) for the designated hour and to appreciat the gift of a life-
supporting environment.
Dated this 1St day of March, 2011.
Jarwes B. Hovland, Mayor
