EDINA COMMUNITY HEALTH COMMISSION

6:30 P.M.
I CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 6:34 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL
Present: Melinda Bothun-Hurley, Kristen Conner, Cathy Cozad, Matt Doscotch, Nadia Martyn,
Aditya Mittal, Ginny Ogle, Alison Pence, Magen Puerzer, Michael Sackett and Staff Liaison Jeff
Brown.
Guest speakers: Annie Engen from Edina Committed; Rihab Alemam, Drew Engelking, Diana
Espana, and Maddie Lockhart from Sober Squad.
Absent: Joel Stegner.
III. APPROVAL OF MEETING AGENDA
Member Bothun-Hurley approved the motioned to approve the Agenda. Member Doscotch
seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.
IV. APPROVAL OF CONSENT AGENDA
A. Approval of November Minutes
No additional edits were submitted. Member Doscotch approved the motioned to
approve the minutes. Member Martyn seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion
carried.
V. COMMUNITY COMMENT
None.
VI. REPORTS/RECOMMENDATIONS
A. Presentation/Discussion: Edina High School Sober Squad and Edina Committed.
Annie Engen from Edina Committed, Rihab Aiemam, Drew Engelking, Diana Espana,
Maddie Lockhart and Magen Puerzer from Sober Squad spoke about the programs and
how they educate students, parents, and the public about drug use and underage
drinking. Video of the presentation and discussion is posted on the City website.
B. Work Group Updates
i. Youth
Member Martyn indicated the group is currently focusing on substance abuse
(alcohol and marijuana). Other areas of concern are bullying, nutrition,
maternal/child health and obesity.
ii General/Senior
Member Bothun-Hurley spoke about the e-cigarette proposal that was passed
by the City council. Chairperson Pence spoke about Health in All Policies as it
relates to the Grandview Development, and spoke about her participation in the
City’s sidewalk discussion. Edina Act on Alzheimer’s, an assessment of who is
interacting with seniors who may have Alzheimer’s, is also being conducted. It is
a BER (Bloomington-Edina-Richfield) Health Improvement program.
iii. Communications
Member Doscotch discussed how this subgroup assisted other subgroups with
communications. An advisory communication regarding the Grandview Project
was submitted requesting that the health of those working and living in Edina
be considered when choosing a project. The Communications work group has
worked to keep the CHC and City websites current and assisted with
communication during the City’s process toward passing a new ordinance
related to the sale/use of e-cigarettes in Edina.
VII. CORRESPONDENCE
None.
VIII. CHAIR AND COMMISSION MEMBER COMMENTS
City Council Member Brindle has inquired about the loss of Kathy Iverson’s position. What are
the City and the School District going to do about not having a health coordinator? City Manager
Neal is having a discussion with the school district to see what that position would look like.
IX. STAFF COMMENTS
The local public health grant agreement is coming due. It is on the December 2 Council Agenda
for signature.
The next Commission meeting is on Tuesday, January 6.
Member Cozad is planning to attend the Grandview Development meeting on Thursday,
December 4.
X. ADJOURNMENT
Member Ogle approved the motion to adjourn the meeting. Member Cozad seconded the
motion. All voted aye. The meeting was adjourned at 7:48 p.m.
