Unused and unsealed wells can pose a threat to our drinking water by acting as a channel between the surface and the aquifer below. If you have a well on your property that is not in use, it must either be sealed or put back into service. Eligible recipients Hennepin County property owners with wells that are no longer in use but have not yet been sealed. Example expenses • Materials • Supplies • Labor costs Application timeline • Applications are accepted throughout the year, but must be reviewed and approved for eligibility before any work begins. • Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and applicants will be notified regarding grant eligibility within two weeks. Guidelines • In order to make the best use of limited funding available, the county prioritizes sealing wells that have the highest potential of impacting drinking water supplies. The selection process factors in characteristics such as well depth, well diameter, proximity to municipal wellhead protection areas and other environmental factors that may increase the potential for contamination of municipal groundwater resources. • To apply, submit the application form along with written bids from two well contractors. • You must contract with a state-licensed well-sealing contractor to complete all required work. Find a licensed contractor by visiting the Minnesota Department of Health’s website, www.health.state.mn.us, search: “wells”. • If you are in the process of selling your property, you are not eligible for grant funds. Amount of funding available Reimbursement of 75% of the actual cost for sealing the well, up to $2,000. Matching funds 25% cash match Project timeline Once the grant agreement has been completed, the grantee will have 90 days to seal the well. Reporting requirements Once the well is sealed, the grantee must provide a copy of the sealed well report (available from the contractor) and an invoice from the contractor, indicating the work performed, with cost.
