and whether th.cy also facet any "IV(I3). Sccondary Crireria" (listed on pages 2 and 3 of the Application Guidc3i.nes).
IiI W Prioritiac & TV (A) Primary Criteria
The attached planting plan illustrates that about 120 trees have been or will be strategically planted
along north -south streets or the east and west sides of Cornelia
Elempntary School. Additional trees planted to the north and northwest of the school will shelter the
building from the prevailing winter winds. Trees will also be planted on the
perimeter of parking areas and other streets around the school, Since the school is located between 1-494 and
the Crosstown Highway to the south and north and Highway 100 to the west and the Southdale shopping area
to the east, the opportunity to reduce carbon dioxide and other harmful gases from automotive traffic is
available. The creation of a park canopy of over 400 new trees will cool this large park area in the summer
and reduce the effects of winter winds.
The school district and Edina Parks Department have cooperated to plant about 125 trees thus far.
The care and maintenance of these trees and all new trees will be the commitment of theses governmental
units on their respective properties for the next 10 years. The project has previously feu fuinled by
donations from the Rotary Club, local merchants, Cornelia PTA, and individual donations. Funding for
planting this spring will come from a planned .Arbor Day neighborhood walkathon, PTA donation, and a
smal1 balance from laet year's fund raising. The Edina Parks and Recreation Depa.auceut ha_s provided
and will provide technical expertise, site preparation and tree planting equipment, water truck, and
miscellaneous services.
TV (B) Secondary Criteria
Students and volunteers will assist in all tree planting and site preparation. Our cost per tree has
been about $50 thus far from sources listed above. The trees aelected are native to Minnesota and selected for
weir hardiness. The park's recreational usage will be enhanced by the addition ur,jhade trees and wind
breaks. The grounds have been organized into plant associations native to n'Iinnesota and will serve as a
I otanical education tool and outdoor learning laboratory.

Project Implementation
a. Methods f r Project lrnl2lement.4tinn
tiVhat methods vnU be be used for planting and other tree -care acu-,ztics? f ion will methods respond to anv special
site conditions (such as presence of Compacted soil, poor drainage, existing pavement on site, underground and
overhead utilities). The minimum standards are given in the Forestry Handbook,'_ad Edition (1984). K Wegner, i=ciiu,r,
Sections 8 and lo; and Mn. Department of Transportation Specifications for Construction (1985) and supplements,
including the 1992 version of MnDOT s standard planting detail sheets.
The tree planting will be conducti-A ttruler the standard procedures used by the City -
of Edina for the planting of its stock. We will plant all stock within 24 hours of its
arrival. We will, purchase only B&B or property potted stock. In soil that is particu-
larly sandy (SW quadrant), we will. replace sand with black dirt and p4iat moss mix.
Stock will be thoroughly watered using the city water truck and available water lines.
All planted trees will have woodchip malch properly diked around the trunks to maximize
water rptf?ution and minimize moisture ava.po>=ation, For at leact two years the trunks of
deciduous stock will be wrapped to prevent winter sun damage. All preparations possible
will be made to have the plarlt:iag sites ready before the arrival of tree stock.
b_ P-lantirg Stock and Guarantee
Liow will plant stock be obtained? (Planting stock must be obtained from a nursery stock dealer or grower certified
by the Minnesota Department of agriculture.) Are project trees guaranteed, and for how long?
All stock will be purchased from Midwest Landscaping of Mapie Plain, MN. (We have
worked with thea for 3 previous plantings). The trees pili not be guaranteed, but our
suzvival rate is 96% thus far.
c. Maintenance
'what practices will be used to maintain project trees and shrubs? Who is responsible for short and long term
maintenances and will suffieient budget be provided for plant maintenance?
The planting areas will be immediately mulched. This wil± reduce water shortages,
dariage by lawn care equipment, and weed growth. School building maiatenauce staff will
thoroughly due] alvwly waLel all uGw trees withi.0 100 LL. vi Lite building during tI?e 199=
growing Season on a weekly basis. Arrangements will be ntade with and hoses provided to
residents or, Kellogg, Claremore, and Cornelia Dr. to wager and tend new trees during the
1993 growing season. if moisture is needed, the city water tanker can be accessed. Each
fall, students under supervision of our master gardener will wrap all deciduous stock.
Fertilizer pellets (slow release) will, be included at all planting sites. 0 -ace each year
the city park staff will be asked to inspect for insect or disease problems so coutrol
can be instituted.

In the spring of 1991, a group of Cornelia School community members and staff began
setting up a plan to reforest the Cornelia School Park. This reforestation project is a
collaborative effort of the school district, Cornelia PTA, and the Edina Parks and
Recreation Department. The project, called Cornelia Continues to Grow, seeks to improve
the local environment by planting trees near the school for energy conservation, improving
recreational sites, creating an arboreal learning environment, and enhancing the nature
aesthetics. A landscaping plan was prepared by a landscape architect. Since then the
community has planted about 150 trees prior to our ReLeaf effort this spring.

Project Narrative (continued)
The steering committee made the arrangements for the following:
1) Negotiated and ordered tree stock
2) Arranged for technical assistance from the Parks Department
3) Developed a student and family planting plan with a family picnic.
4) Contacted local officials, Cornelia neighbors and the media about the project.
On April 22-23, we planted 177 trees on park and school grounds. Each of the 15
classes planted 5-8 trees each. The balance of the trees were planted by families on April
23 at an evening plantathon and picnic. All trees were fertilized, had wood chips added
around the base, and are being watered.
We noted that two major variations from our plan developed: first, we found the variet,
of trees we had hoped for were not available; second, we found that we rn„l d oh—J'a the free
stock at about 1/3 less than we anticipated when ordered in larger quantities and in pots.
The planting of large numbers of trees with school children works best with potted trees.
Balled and burlaped trees are large and difficult to handle for children and families.
All in all, the Minnesota ReLeaf grant has immeasurably enhanced the reforestation of
Cornelia School Park.

CELEBRATES PEOPLE
April 16, 1993
Mayor Fred Richards
Edina City Hall
4801 W. 50th St.
Edina, MN 55424
Dear Mayor Richards,
The Cornelia School community is planting a portion of the 150+ trees on
the Cornelia School Park grounds on Friday, April 23, 5:30-7:30p.m.
Cornelia School, the PTA, and the Edina Parks and Recreation Department
have cooperated over the past two years to plant about 140 trees on the
park and school grounds. Recently we received a $6,000. grant from the
Minnesota Releaf program (see attached).
We would like to invite you or a representative to participate in a short
ceremony at 5:30p.m., April 23 to recognize the contribution of our
students and their families to this effort. Please also join us for an
informal picnic dinner. The ceremony would include a few brief comments
and a symbolic (actual) tree planting.
If at all possible, we would appreciate it if the Edina City Council could
pass a resolution declaring April 23 as Arbor Day in Edina.
We also wish to commend the Park and Recreation Department and its
director, Mr. Bob Kojetin, on their cooperation.
Please let us kow if you or a representative can join us on the 23rd. Thank
you!
