City Continues Environmental Film Series With ‘The Burden’
Edina, Minn., Dec. 17, 2015 – The City of Edina’s Energy & Environment Commission (EEC) is presenting the
first installment of its 2016 Environmental Film series. The documentary, “The Burden,” will be shown at 7 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 28. The documentary will be shown at no cost for attendees at Edina Senior Center Fireside
Room at 5280 Grandview Square.
“The Burden” tells the story of fossil fuel dependence as our greatest long-term national security threat, and
why the military is leading the transition to clean energy. The film is the centerpiece of a campaign to inspire a
movement that strengthens our energy security and harnesses the power of American innovation to make us
leaders in the global 21st century clean-energy economy.
“‘The Burden’ is a powerful film on the ways oil is interconnected with national security, military operations and
the environment. Scenes show the ‘burden’ of oil dependency on our military personnel, and it is enlightening to
hear from those who wrestle with this issue on a daily basis,” said EEC Member John Howard. “Importantly, the
film shows how the largest institutional user of oil, the U.S. military, is working to reduce its oil dependency
through clean energy and how others can do the same."
“The Burden” presents perspectives from people inside the military and across the political spectrum who
advocate for breaking America’s addiction to fossil fuels as essential to improving our national security.
The film features high-level active duty and retired military leaders and elected officials. Some of the country’s
most vital consumer technologies emerged out of military needs, such as the Internet and GPS, and the military
is poised to play the same role again with energy.
Light refreshments will be served. The EEC encourages attendees to stay for a discussion following the movie.
