Two Edina Police Officers Receive Commendation From
St. Louis Park Police Department
Edina, Minn., Jan. 14, 2016 – Edina Police Detective Kenna Dick and Patrol Officer Morgan Piper recently
received a St. Louis Park Police Department commendation for their successful negotiation with a suicidal
woman in their community in the fall of 2015.
“It was our great pleasure to present Commendations to Detective Dick and Officer Piper in recognition of
their valuable assistance in helping a suicidal woman on Excelsior Boulevard late last year,” said St. Louis Park
Police Sgt. Mike Garland. “As the SLP Department Crisis Negotiations Team Leader, it has been my great
privilege to work closely with both officers on many occasions … and I admire them both for their skill and
dedication. The great working collaboration we have with Edina Police Department’s outstanding Negotiator
Team always leads to quality results for our citizens and helps us be as responsive as possible to their needs.”
Piper and Dick negotiated with the woman on the Excelsior Boulevard bridge over Minnesota Highway 100
for over two hours in October 2015 before successfully talking her down off of the bridge.
“They have gone through specialized training to handle these situations and we rarely experience them,” said
Edina Police Lt. Brian Tholen. “In this situation, they were trained hostage negotiators and used their skills to
talk to the person down off the bridge.”
