Edina Receives Award for Popular Annual Financial Report
Edina, Minn., Jan. 14, 2016 – The City of Edina’s Finance Department recently received the Award for
Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers
Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). The Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular
Annual Financial Reporting is a prestigious national award recognizing conformance with the highest
standards for preparation of state and local government popular reports.
The award-winning 2014 Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) was published as the June issue of Edition:
Edina, which is distributed as an insert in the Edina Sun-Current.
In addition to the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting, the GFOA
also awards a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award and the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence
in Financial Reporting. With receipt of the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial
Reporting, Edina has now received all three awards offered by the GFOA.
“[The PAFR] is a way for us to present a summarized version of our CAFR (Comprehensive Annual
Financial Report) so residents and whoever is interested -- who don’t have a strong financial background --
can really get something out of it,” said Assistant Finance Director Kyle Sawyer. “Of course, our first
priority is putting out a good document for our residents … but we’re very excited about the trifecta and
getting that third award.”
The 2014 PAFR submission is the first time the City received the Achievement in Popular Annual Financial
Reporting. The City has also received its first Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 2014-2015
budget document and the ninth consecutive Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial
Reporting for the 2014 CAFR. Sawyer plans to continue to submit all three documents for the awards in
future years, and hopes to continually improve the documents through feedback garnered through the
award experience.
Judges praised the report and the ease in which readers were able to trace the actual revenues and
expenditures amounts to the City's CAFR. They gave general feedback regarding readability and
distribution.
