The day was created to help increase interest in walking and biking throughout the school year, which in turn, helps build healthy, lifelong exercise habits. The benefits of daily exercise for youth are well known and range from improved health, lower body mass and higher attendance rates and student academic performance. Motorists driving on May 4 are reminded to slow down and watch for extra children who may be out on their bikes or crossing the street on foot. “National Bike to School Day is an opportunity for kids, their parents and the community to appreciate the benefits of active transportation,” said Transportation Planner Mark Nolan. “It’s also an opportunity for road users to recognize that Edina’s ‘Living Streets’ include those on bikes and on foot.” -30-
