City to Hold Grand Opening Event for Pickleball Courts
Edina, Minn., July 7, 2016 – The public is invited to celebrate the grand opening of the pickleball courts at
Rosland Park, 4300 W. 66th St. A grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony will be held there 4 p.m.
Wednesday, July 20.
“These are the first dedicated pickleball courts in Edina and I’m very excited,” said Parks & Recreation Director
Ann Kattreh. The Parks & Recreation Department previously striped pickleball courts on the Garden Park
tennis courts.
“Pickleball is a sport that people of all ages and abilities can play and that’s one of the things that makes it
great,” Kattreh said. “It’s definitely an up-and-coming sport and I think it’ll be a fantastic addition to an
already prominent park.”
Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. The sport shares
the dimensions and layout of a badminton court and a net and rules similar to tennis, with a few
modifications. Construction on the five-court complex, which is located next to the tennis courts at Rosland
Park, began in May. The courts were made possible because of a generous donation from cousins Bruce and
Paul Mooty who made the donation to honor their fathers, John and Melvin, respectively.
The grand opening event will include remarks from Mayor Jim Hovland, City Manager Scott Neal and Kattreh,
as well as a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Following the ceremony, the courts will be opened up for free play.
Seasoned pickleball players will available to assist new players. Racquets and balls will be provided.
Refreshments will also be available following the ceremony.
The City will offer a pickleball clinic 10-11 a.m. July 26. Space is limited, so those interested are encouraged to
make a reservation soon. Reservations can be made at the Senior Center, 5280 Grandview Square, or by
calling 952-833-9570.
“It’s nice to expand the City’s courts to offer dedicated pickleball courts, since those courts in Garden Park are
already so heavily used. And it’s a great location because it’s near the tennis courts and those two sports can
sometimes go hand in hand,” said Recreation Supervisor Amanda Clarke. “Pickleball is definitely a growing
sport for all ages and we’re so thankful for the Mooty donation.”
