City to Provide Buckthorn Dump Site for Residents
Edina, Minn., Sept. 25, 2015 – The City of Edina’s Public Works Department will have a designated site for
residents to get rid of their buckthorn shrubs.
Buckthorn is an invasive species that prevents native plants from thriving in areas that are not continuously
mowed. It was introduced to Minnesota in the middle of the 1800s and was very popular as a hedge material.
Now many towns are trying to get rid of this invasive species to help more natural plants flourish.
“The fall is the best time to cut and spray buckthorn. Roundup will soak into the roots and prevent it from
becoming a bigger issue in the future. It is best to have a concentrate of at least 20-25 percent glyphosate to
kill the stumps,” said City Forester Luther Overholt.
Residents may drop off their buckthorn brush across from the Braemar Golf Dome at 7420 Braemar Blvd.
Drop-off days are the last two weekends in October. Saturdays Oct. 22 and 29, the buckthorn dump will be
open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays Oct. 23 and 30, it will be open noon to 4 p.m.
“The City wants to give residents this easy opportunity to dispose of buckthorn, instead of trying to find an
alternative solution,” said Overholt.
Residents must show a picture ID with a current Edina address. Commercial haulers are not allowed to leave
buckthorn brush at the dump unless they are accompanied by the residents for whom they are working.
Buckthorn brush cannot be bagged, boxed or bundled. If it is, it must be removed from the container before
being left at the dump.
