Sports Dome Inflated Over Braemar Field
Edina, Minn., October 25, 2016 – The dome over Braemar Field is up and final preparations are under
way before an anticipated Nov. 7 opening of the indoor facility, 7509 Ikola Way.
The dome-raising process, a combined effort of Edina Public Works and Parks & Recreation staff, began Friday
morning, Oct. 21, and was completed at 4 p.m. the next day.
Work also is under way on the outdoor ice rink known as “The Backyard.” The ice rink officially opens Oct. 28.
The Sports Dome covers a 400-foot-long FieldTurf surface and provides a 55-degree practice facility for
football, baseball, softball, lacrosse and soccer from November through mid-April. Braemar Field also hosts
family events, open recreation time and can be rented.
In spring, the dome is taken down and stored until the next fall; the turf field remains for summer use.
On Friday, Oct. 22, crews listened to directions from a Yeadon supervisor as they unrolled the pieces that
make up the 100,000-square-foot dome and began assembling them. It takes about 50 people to unroll,
flatten and shift the large pieces into place. The sections are then stitched together before inflation begins.
Yeadon, of Minneapolis, made the dome material.
Lights and insulation are put in next, followed by equipment such as batting cages and security cameras.
“Start to finish, we could go from an empty field to a fully functional dome in about seven working days,” said
Chad Eischens, General Manager of Braemar Arena and Braemar Field.
Braemar Field and the outdoor ice rink are adjacent to Braemar Arena, located at 7501 Ikola Way. For more
