City of Edina RFP Process Begins for the Next Comprehensive Plan
Edina, Minn., Nov. 3, 2016 – Requests for Proposals (RFPs) are now being accepted for consulting firms to
assist with the City of Edina’s 2018 Comprehensive Plan update. The Comprehensive Plan provides Edina with
an outline for future development.
The Metropolitan Council requires every city in the seven-county metro area to have a comprehensive plan and
State law requires that it be updated every 10 years. The Planning Commission will serve as the Comprehensive
Plan Task Force and lead the process.
“Beginning the RFP process is the first step in getting this project started. We hope to select the consultant
before the first of the year and begin the project in 2017,” explained Community Development Director Cary
Teague. “A Comprehensive Plan is the 10-year vision of the City. It’s a big picture of how the City wants to
shape itself in the next 10 years. The Comprehensive Plan articulates a City-wide vision with goals and an
objective. As part of the Plan, we’ll have a series of public meetings to get public input. That will be an important
way for the public to get involved.”
Edina last completed a Comprehensive Plan in 2008 (available online at EdinaMN.gov/comprehensiveplan).
Teague expects the 2018 Comprehensive Plan to be an update of the last plan and provide perspective on
where the City currently stands.
“The focus of the Land Use Section of the Plan will be in areas where the City is most likely to change. Those
areas include the Greater Southdale Area, 50th & France, 44th and France, Grandview, and 70th and Cahill,” he
said. “Some areas are already in process and continuing them will be a part of the Comprehensive Plan.”
Resident and business owner task forces will be created in each of the Land Use Sections. Other important
chapters in the Plan include Housing, Arts and Culture, Community Health, Energy and Environment, Water
Resources, Economic Development, Heritage Preservation, Human Rights and Relations, Parks and
Transportation. Each of the City’s advisory boards and commissions will assist and provide input; the public will
be welcome to provide feedback in those areas as well.
Proposals can be sent to Teague at 4801 W. 50th Street, Edina MN 55424. Submissions are due by Nov. 23. For
