Edina park board dedicates
Hermann Strachauer Park
Dedication ceremonies
were held last week for the
renaming of Beard Park to
Hermann Strachauer Park.
The park, located at 62nd
and Beard streets, was re-
named last October in honor
of Hermann Strachauer,
longtime Edina resident who
served on the Parks and Rec-
reation Board from 1948 to
1961. Strachauer was in-
volved in almost every step of
the early stages of the Edina
park system.
Strachauer was in-
strumental in putting togeth-
er the original survey of the
city's park system. He also
helped secure the 1957
$800,000 bond issue to
purchase the 450 acres of the
Hays farm property for the
Braemar Arena and to build
the city's municipal pool.
The dedication of the park
was postponed last year
when Strachauer began un-
dergoing cancer treatment.
He died in February.
Renaming Beard Park is
part of what is expected to be
an ongoing process of chang-
ing parks named after the
streets on which they sit.
Nineteen parks in Edina still
have street names.
Eleven parks in Edina
have been named after peo-
ple, primarily prominent
citizens: Van Valkenburg
Park at Malibu and County
Road 18 is named after
former Mayor James Van
Valkenburg; Alden Park at
6750 Belmore Lane honors
Gretchen Alden, former
longtime city clerk;
Bredesen Park at Vernon
and Olinger avenues is
named for former Mayor
Arthur Bredesen; Weber
Field at 4115 Grimes Ave. is
named after the first con-
stable of the city of Morn-
ingside; Harold Utley Park
at 50th and Wooddale is
named after a former promi-
nent citizen in the Country
Club area; William
Wardwell Lewis Park at De-
wey Hill and Cahill roads

of the park board and current
chairman of the planning
commission; Williams Park,
the Old Mill site at 50th and
Browndale, was donated by
an Edina man whose son,
William, died in World War
H; Arneson Acres carries the
name of the man who
donated the 15 acres of land
for the park; Frank Tupa-
Edina Historical Center, 4918
Eden Ave., is named after a
longtime city council mem-
ber who actively worked on
purchasing and seeking out
park property; T. Lea Todd,

ries the name of the former
