MAKING EDINA A FAMILY AFFAIR
Presentation to Community Agencies and Groups
I. Background of Edina's Community Task Force II
i
A. Purpose
1. To continue where Task Force I (April, 1980) left off. Its aim
was to make Edina a healthier, more caring place to live.
2. To identify problem areas concerning family wellness and chemical
abuse.
3. To examine existing programs and consider the need for new ones.
4. To develop appropriate solutions.
B. Make-up of Task Force II
1. Comprised of representatives from each system and institution
in Edina.
2. Broad in scope (churches, schools, businesses, service organizations,
etc.) so that a wide range of ideas would be shared.
C. At present three steering committees are in the process of finding
ways of implementing suggested recommendations.
1. Social norms regarding chemical use.
2. Young people - positive peer pressure.
3. Families - involvement, outreach, communication.
II. One objective of the Steering Committee dealing with the family - to
develop programs that emphasize involvement of the entire family.
A. Purpose
1. Parents in the community would get to know one another better.
2. Communication within families would be easier.
3. Common concerns are more likely to be shared and positive values
reinforced.
4. To bring about long range impact on peer culture.
B. Implementation
1. Encourage existing community groups to include a family activity
as part of their present program; i.e., picnic, evening at the
YMCA, pot luck dinner.
III. Reasons we are presenting this information to you.
A. Familiarity with your organization and its impact.
B. To encourage groups within your organization to have more family
activities.
IV. Audience response concerning encouragement of family activities within
existing groups.
A. How might our objective be accomplished within your organization?
B. Any other reactions or suggestions?

1. Peer education group in Edina High School.
2. Junior High Prevention Specialist.
3. Chemical Health Coordinator
4. Community Center.
5. Chemical Health Advisory Committee.
6. Policy revision in the schools concerning student behavior.
