Install two stainless steel tube bundle heat exchangers in amonia hot has line to provide heat source for zamboni hot water and for snow melting. 3. Repipe hot water piping in boiler room and compressor room to utilize heat recovery water. Insulate two existing water tanks and use for hot water storage. 4. Repair existing contral station air handler. Involves damper replacement, motor linkage etc. 5. Add motorized control on combustion air damper to be interlocked with boiler burner. 6. Seal all arena doors to prevent excessive ambient air infiltration. Install tight sealing counterweighted dampers on six exhaust fans. 7. Install new dehumidification system. System includes outdoor air-cooled condensing unit with two indoor air handlers. Each air handler will be connected to existing air ducts. 8. Isolate arena from office and locker room area with tempered plywood above existing plexi-glas. -A - FEASIBILITY STUDY OF BRAEMER ICE ARENA Refrigeration Equipment 2-"Vilter" VMC 448 HN3Comps.Ea. 309.3 CFM displacement, capacity 63.6 tons at 20 PSIG (5.50F) suction & 185 PSIG con- densing (now driven by "Caterpillar" gas engines.) Replaces with. 2-100 HP 460/3/60,1200 RPM motors, on adjustable bases with. new "Thomas" direct drive couplings. 1 One "Recold"*YPF X2, Evap. Cond. with desuperheater, Capacity 3,548,490 BTU's at 96.20F condensing & 750 amb. wet bulb. This condenser cools the hot discharge gas from both compressors and water for gas engine drives under certain con- ditions it is 19+ o short of capacity. On start up the RPM of refrigeration compressor is 1500, this is 300 RPM over design operating conditions for these com- pressors. Vilter warranty reads not over 1200 RPM changing to electric motors will provide 1200 RPM maximum RPM and take the ® engine load off the E.V.C. providing better operation. • All controls, switches, thermometers and gauges should be tested, repaired, set properly, or be replaced. Heat Reclaim Desuperheaters Install in machinery room, mounted up on steel frame, beside compressors 2-8 5/8" diameter X 12 ft. long, stainless steel tube, condensers utilizing the 2400 ammonia hot gas dis- charge, heating enough hot water each hour of operation, for melting zamboni snow and providing hot water for zamboni ice making operation. Hot and cold copper water piping to and from condensers to be suspended over drive between buildings, insulated, protected with automotic heat cable from freezing. Dehumidification, Condensation & Fog For year -around operation these must be controlled, there is no valid reason to have these problems as the laws of nature, which causes these conditions is known. -1- A Tests made May 10/78 of inside conditons of rink area showed 740 F to 760F dry bulb & 62 F-63OF wet bulb, with 126 tons (maximum capacity of the two compressors)' being used. Proper design conditions should be 450F to 480F wet bulb & 50 to 55OF dry-bulb. With proper dehumidifcation, these conditions can be provided, saving 63 to 76 tons. The ice rink area has infiltration problems caused by the following: 1. Crack leakage around all outside doors, poorly fitted, need weatherstripping (4"-Ij" cracks), 2. Exhaust fans leakage of 1 to 1% square feet. 3. Openings over and under plastic shields on front end above deck and below. 4. Gates should be kept closed at all times.: Estimated infiltration now with 1OMPH South wind (summer) is 24,000 CFM. Rink area has approximately 48,840 cubic feet so. you are having a complete air change every 20 minutes. This amount of air change would handle 4800 people at 5CFM outside air each. • Corrections can be made by weatherstripping all outside doors, install new air tight dampers in exhaust fans and ex- tending and closing partitions on ends and keeping gate; closed. Dehumidification can be provided with the installation of 20 to 24 tons of refrigeration equipment. Rink tonnage can be reduced about 25 tons by installing a new aluminum ceiling with .04 emissivity, this also saves on lighting. 0 -2-
