2 EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT
By Lauren Siebenaler, Communications
Intern
The community’s youngest water lovers will have
something new to enjoy this summer when the Edina
Aquatic Center opens for the season June 3.
A new play structure will be installed in the zero-depth
pool and two new filters will improve water quality and
clarity. In 2018, swimmers can expect a new speed slide
and new exterior gel coats on the existing two slides.
These are part of continual improvements made to the
Aquatic Center since it opened in 1958.
Marni Lamberty is a teacher in Edina who has taken her
children, Eden, 9, and Wilson, 7, to the Aquatic Center
every summer. “I’m excited for the new play structure. I
think it will be really fun for the families to see that, and
EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT
2017 Spring/Summer
more of the kids that go into the bigger pool will check it
out, too,” she said.
The existing play structure in the zero-depth pool is 20
years old and is starting to deteriorate. It is ready for a
makeover.
“Our zero-depth area is geared toward families with kids
8 and under and it is busy all the time,” said General
Manager Patty McGrath. “I think putting in a new play
structure is going to modernize the facility. Some of the
other improvements at the facility haven’t been aimed
at that 8-and-under group. So, this will be a very specific
improvement for those families. People love that play
space with the zero-depth and it’s really good for our
younger guests.”
The two existing slides have no structural problems, but
will be refurbished with gel coats. The slides are about
15 years old and the fiberglass has faded over time. After
years of being in the hot sun and freezing Minnesota
winters, the slides have lost their shine, so this gel will
restore that and make them look like new.
A speed slide will be added to the existing tower with
the other slides.
“The slide tower is 30 feet tall, so you get the drop and
then it will have its own run-out,” McGrath said. “Our
other slides drop into a pool, but this one will come into
a run-out. There really aren’t any other aquatic centers
around the metro area that have a slide like this.”
“I’m excited to see the changes,” Lamberty said. “I
think the new speed slide will be awesome, and my
kids will definitely want to try it. I think it will definitely
improve the facility. It’s always crowded there, but even
on those crowded days, we have so much fun there.
This will definitely attract more people there to try out
the slides.”
Aquatic Center staff is excited about the installation of
two new filters. The same type of filter was put in the
50-meter main pool for the summer 2016 season. It
improved the water quality and clarity immensely. So,
the next step is to replace the filters for the drop-in pool
and the zero-depth pool. Each pool has its own filtration
systems to keep the other pools running if one needs to
temporarily close.
“The filter part is probably the least exciting for guests,
but we had just replaced the filter on the main pool
prior to the 2016 season and we were really, really
happy with our water clarity and our ability to maintain
our big bather load,” said McGrath. “In the afternoon
on a busy day, you can start to get cloudy water, but
we didn’t see any of that last season. So, it helps our
operations continue on.”
The top priority for the 2017 summer season is to put in
the two new filters and zero-depth play structure. The
other two slide projects should be ready for the 2018
season.
“We don’t want the Aquatic Center to be in disarray
or the construction to have a negative impact on this
season,” said McGrath. “We feel like we can put in the
new structure at the zero-depth pool and that’s not
going to impact a big area. Building the slide is going to
take longer and there’s more that could lead to delays.
So we’re going to wait until after this season to start
that construction.”
Aquatic Center season passes are available for
purchase with a pre-season discount online at
EdinaAquaticCenter.com until April 30. For questions

NEW! READY-SET-CONNECT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
It is the belief of the Edina Community Foundation that all children should
be encouraged to participate in recreational programs. The Foundation is
committed to making the application to access scholarship funds as simple as
possible.
The idea of Ready-Set-Connect is to make the registration process as easy as possible
and to allow a person or a family to apply once in order to be eligible for scholarships
with any affiliated group. The goal behind this program is to reduce the amount of
paperwork for individuals and to allow easy access into programs in our community.
The Ready-Set-Connect program is administered by the Edina Community Foundation.
To apply, fill out and submit a form online at www.EdinaChallenge.org. Paper applications
are available in English, Spanish and Somali by contacting the Foundation at 952-833-
9537. Once your eligibility has been verified (usually within a week), you will receive a
letter of notification and your Connect Card in the mail. This card should be used at the
time of registration for any participating programs.

2017 SUMMER GAMES AT CENTENNIAL
LAKES PARK
TENTATIVE OPENING DATE:
SATURDAY, MAY 6
Putting Course
It’s not miniature golf, it’s golf in miniature! Centennial
Lakes Park’s 18 manicured bent grass greens range in
length from 57 to 125 feet and are surrounded by sand
traps, ponds, boulders and planter beds.
Players use only a putter to negotiate these heavily
undulated greens. This Par 51 layout is 1,662 feet in length
and takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to play.
All ages and abilities are welcome. However, due to the
difficulty of the course, it is recommended that players
be at least 8 years old.
Please note that group reservations on the putting course
are only available Monday through Friday until 5 p.m. No
reservations can be made for weekends or evenings.
Lawn Games
The park features championship-caliber croquet and lawn
bowling courts. These lush bent grass lawns are some of
the finest in the Midwest.
Courts may be rented by the hour, with all equipment
and written instructions included in the court fee. The
park also hosts a variety of tournaments and leagues
throughout the summer.
Paddleboats
For a more leisurely activity, take a lazy ride along the
waterways of Centennial Lakes on one of our sturdy four-
person paddleboats.
The park’s lake consists of large bodies of water in the
north and south ends connected by a channel that runs
under bridges, along the putting course and past the
Hughes Pavilion. Paddling by boat is a great way to see
the park.
Group Outings
Organize your own tournament or call ahead and we will
be happy to assist you with all of the details of your event.
Afterwards, visit any of the great restaurants along our
lakeshore, or retire to the Hughes Pavilion where you can
have your caterer serve up a special meal. Call 952-833-
9583 for more information.

Great poems can come from anywhere!
All you need to get started is an idea,
an image or just some words that sound
interesting to you. In this class, we’ll consider
poetry as an ever-evolving art form that benefits
from experimenting freely in both high-tech (such
as poems accompanied by video and music that you

loud) formats. We’ll make poems using all the tools
we have at hand, so bring whatever you have: old
tape recorder, cell phone, notebook and pencil, video

Students will use UV rays from a UV light box (provided)

BEGINNING DRAWING
Donna Webb
Artists are “see-ers.” They literally see the world around
them in a different way than the rest of us. Yet, all of us have
the ability to be “see-ers.” To learn how to draw, we must
first learn to “look” without perceptions. We will practice
this artist’s way of looking and drawing from observation,
and experiment with a number of drawing techniques that
have been used by artists over the centuries. This class
is geared toward beginners, but is suitable for those who
wish to refresh their drawing skills, or just need a class or
assignment to get them going. *This class meets at Edina

FOCUS ON FLOWERS
Laura Frykman
Look closely at fresh blossoms. Learn to capture a moment
in the unfolding of life and light. Your interpretation is
everything, but how do you get a realistic likeness quickly
and still personalize the piece? This is the challenge
we’ll explore in this class for intermediate pastelists and
oil painters. You can expect to learn how to use value
and shape to create a compelling composition, build up
pastel layers, create lost-and-found edges, show light
reflecting off of or shining through petals, use textures and
alternating cool and warm colors for a dynamic surface.
The instructor will use group exercises, demonstration
of the steps and individualized coaching to help students
succeed. Abstract artists welcome as well as realists.
Flowers will be provided; bring a favorite vase, background
cloths, and digital camera if possible. *No class July 4.

LANDSCAPES INSIDE & OUT
Laura Frykman
Students will start by painting indoors, then venture
outdoors as soon as the Minnesota weather allows! For
intermediate pastel or oil painters, students will start
from thumbnail sketches and learn the steps to build up
a composition of layers. Emphasis will be on simplifying
shapes; controlling values and depth and creating work that
is clear, vivid and has a compelling presence. Instruction
is a combination of demos and individualized help. If you
choose, paint step-by-step alongside the instructor. When
it’s rainy, class moves indoors and students will learn how
to finish a good start, without making it look like a photo.

formed her destiny.

DANNY WHO? FOUR DECADES OF IRISH
MUSIC AND MISCHIEF
A concert, reading and author Q & A with Writer/Performer/
Musician Tom Dahill
Saturday, Feb. 25, 10-11 a.m. | Free Event!
Join us for a reading, performance, Q&A and book signing with
Irish-American performer Tom Dahill, author of “Danny Who?”,
a memoir published by Celtic Collaborative Press in early 2017.
Tom Dahill once said, “I wanted to be good, but I didn’t
know how.” This irreverent and witty memoir recounts the
adventures of Dahill, Minnesota showman and performer.
Growing up the third of seven children in St. Paul, Dahill is the
family troublemaker. He gets caught smoking in the second
grade, sets fire to his parents’ wardrobe as an adolescent,
and receives a felony stuffed-bear theft conviction as a
teenager. Eventually abandoning mischief for music, he
encounters a colorful cast of Irish musicians and characters
across America and Ireland. Dahill will read from his memoir
and perform songs in the rich and vibrant Irish tradition.
Over the past four decades, Dahill has contributed to the
revival of interest in Irish music. Dahill appears regularly at
many local venues, including The Dubliner Pub and Café in
St. Paul. Watch Dahill on YouTube, https://www.youtube.

questions from the audience, and provide some laughs along
the way. Hope to see you at this special April Fool’s event.
