Speak Up, Edina!
MARCH 2016
Volume 3, Issue 3
Edi tion:
The City’s next online discussion is now available
at SpeakUpEdina.org. The discussion, which
focuses on the Centennial Lakes Farmers Market,
is available until May 9.
In June, Centennial Lakes Park will kick off its
seventh-annual Farmers Market. The weekly
event allows consumers to purchase directly from
farmers, growers and producers, ensuring a high
level of freshness and quality. Approximately
three dozen vendors set up along the walkways
outside Hughes Pavilion and sell items such as
fruits, vegetables, meats, jams, honey, cheeses,
breads, confections and more. The Market is held
3-7 p.m. Thursdays June 16 to Sept. 29, 2016.
In the discussion, the City asks whether residents
visit and buy products at the Centennial Lakes
Farmers Market and what they purchase,
what they think of the quality and selection
of products available from vendors, and what
types of products or vendors should be added
or explored that aren’t currently offered at the
Farmers Market. Feedback from this discussion
will be compiled and presented to the City
Council May 17.
This month, the City has been gathering
feedback on advertising. Questions asked
include what residents think of the amount
of advertising compared to content in its
publications; whether residents patronize
businesses they see support the City through
advertising; if the City should sell more
advertising at City facilities; and what residents
think of expanding advertising even further, to
areas such as on water towers, in City parking
ramps such as at 50th & France, and on the City
website. This discussion is open until April 11.
Feedback will be compiled and presented to the
City Council April 19.

SpeakUpEdina.org.
The City received notification from the Minnesota
State Historic Preservation Office last month that an
unassuming bridge on Wooddale Avenue is now listed
on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Works Progress Administration (WPA), as part of a
federal relief project, constructed the Wooddale Avenue
bridge in 1937 during the Great Depression to provide
work to the unemployed.
“In 1937, the Village
of Edina provided the
design, engineering
and materials, while the
federal government
provided the labor,”
explained Joyce Repya,
Senior Planner.
Denis Gardner, National
Register Historian with
the Minnesota Historical
Society, said the federal
relief program helped
provide different types
of jobs during the Great
Depression.
“It put unskilled people to work. Workers could literally
bolt [the corrugated steel arches] together; it didn’t
take a lot of skill to bolt them together. But then you’d
hire the stone mason – the highly crafted person – who
would put the facing of stone on it. So, you’re putting
to work those who are unskilled and those who are also
skilled,” he said.
Together, workers built the bridge using a combination
of corrugated steel to form the arch structure; the
masons then used Platteville Limestone to form the
headwalls, railings and wingwalls.
The Wooddale Avenue bridge was built at the same time
as St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, across the street at
4439 W. 50th St. Both were constructed using Platteville
Limestone. The Village originally considered using
boulders for the bridge’s construction, but altered the
materials to complement the church.
“It’s designed in this rustic style, which fits very well in
its setting because its setting is Minnehaha Creek. You
don’t cross Minnehaha Creek with something ugly. You
want to cross Minnehaha Creek with something that’s
going to decorate the landscape, not take away from
the landscape,” said
Gardner.
“By recognizing the
significance of your
property and planning
for its preservation,
you are participating in
the national movement
which aims to preserve,
for the benefit of
future generations,
our cultural heritage,”
wrote Barbra Mitchell
Howard, Deputy State
Historic Preservation
Officer for the Minnesota Historical Society in her
Feb. 2 letter to the City of Edina declaring the
Wooddale Avenue bridge’s placement on the National
Register of Historical Places.
As a part of its 2016 work plan, the Heritage Preservation
Board is going forward with a request to the Edina
City Council to have the Wooddale Avenue bridge
designated a local Heritage Landmark. The City will be
responsible for maintaining and preserving the bridge,
and a plan of treatment to accompany the landmark
designation will ensure that.
“The Wooddale Avenue bridge can last a long, long
time,” Gardner said. “It just has to be maintained.”

Bridge Designated a Historical Place
If the winter league was any
indication, this summer’s Bean Bag
League will be a big hit.
The winter league, which wrapped
up last month, was made up of
adults of all ages with a wide range
of bean bag skills. On Thursday
evenings, the participants tossed
bags in friendly two-person team
competition. The first five weeks
were standard league play with the
final championship tournament
played on Feb. 25.
“The league is laid back and the
main point is to have a good time.
It’s a great opportunity to get
together with friends and have
some fun one night a week,” said
Adam Tilsner, Pro Shop Attendant
at Braemar Golf Course.
Participant Mary McGarry said, “I
saw it on Twitter and I thought ‘this
is something I can do with friends.’
I was pleasantly surprised at how
much fun it was and it was not a
huge commitment.”
The winter league was played inside
the clubhouse, so the distance
between the boards was slightly
less than if players were playing
outside. The summer league will
move outdoors to take advantage
of the beautiful summer evenings.
“The Braemar Bean Bag
League focuses on fun, friendly
competition for people of all skill
levels. Teams in past leagues
are already looking forward to
spending summer evenings
tossing bags while having some
food and drinks from our friends
at Tin Fish,” said Tilsner.
The summer Bean Bag League will
run June 16-July 21 on Thursday
evenings.
Two-person teams must register.
There is a maximum of 12 teams in
the summer league. Registration
is open until filled. To register,
visit BraemarGolf.com and click
on “Special Events.”
