PROCLAMATION
WHITE CANE DAY IN EDINA
MAY 21, 2005
WHEREAS, the White Cane is a significant tool for independence of blind and visually
impaired persons and is a symbol of expanding opportunities for the
blind; and
WHEREAS, LIONS International, with over 1,300,000 members in the free world, has
been dedicated for over seventy years to bring better sight to those in
need; and
WHEREAS, the Edina Lions Club has been outstanding in the community by helping
the needy with sight problems, particularly macular degeneration through
the use of its White Cane donations to the University of Minnesota, and
• WHEREAS, the Edina Lions Club voluntarily provides manpower and leadership
amounting to many hours of donated time and effort receiving
contributions at Edina grocery stores.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, James B. Hovland, Mayor of Edina, to hereby proclaim
Saturday, May 21, 2005 to be WHITE CANE DAY IN EDINA and
encourage all Edina citizens to join me in sharing the Lions' concern that
the best sight possible be provided for our neighbors in need by giving
generously to Lions White Cane Day. Every penny will give the "gift of
sight."
