Through the Ready-Set-Connect program, a person or a family applies just once in order to be eligible for scholarships with any affiliated group. The goal behind this program is to reduce the amount of paperwork for individuals and to allow easy access into programs in our community. The Ready-Set-Connect program is administered by the Edina Community Foundation. To apply, fill out and submit the form online at www.EdinaChallenge.org. (Paper applications are available through the Edina Community Foundation in English, Spanish and Somali.) Once your eligibility has been verified (typically within a week), you will receive a letter of notification and your Connect Card in the mail. Full refunds are given only when a program or reservation is canceled by the Parks & Recreation Department. Order a set of clubs at the time of registration and they will be ready for your child at their first golf lesson. Raku is a firing process developed in 16th century Japan for the Japanese tea ceremony. Bisque pots are glazed, dried and fired in the kiln where they remain until the glazes have melted at temperatures around 1,800 degrees. The piece is removed hot from the kiln, put into a metal “reduction chamber” full of combustible material that burns and alters the glaze, color and surface. The Raku process is fun and hands-on and produces wonderful, lustrous and crackle glazes. All students will glaze-fire three times in this eight-week class. Writing her debut novel, local author Rebecca Kanner was overcome with the desire to give voice to Noah’s wife, a woman mentioned only in passing in the Bible. Publishers Weekly writes: “Sinners and the Sea: The Untold Story of Noah’s Wife animates a harsh, almost dystopic world of fallen people struggling to survive. Noah’s unnamed wife is a powerful, memorable character.” For her latest work, Esther: A Novel, Kanner reimagined the book of Esther. Library Journal states: “Kanner’s characters crackle to life as Esther’s tale is related in glorious detail. Razor-sharp dialog set against the backdrop of a court rife with treachery and political intrigue keep the pages turning. Esther is highly intelligent, politically savvy and determined.” Copies of the books will be available for purchase and signing. SPARKLE ON: WOMEN AGING IN GRATITUDE Kim Kane 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 | Free event! Kim Kane takes ordinary experiences and creates stories filled with extraordinary learning and moments. This presentation will include anecdotes from everyday life that come alive and used as a storyline in the presentation. It covers topics from changes in bodies as women age (hello chin hair!); importance of having friendships; grief and loss; and wearing clothing that fits. The message is designed to encourage women to believe it is never too late to be and do what you want! Audience members will leave with information about: • Changes we experience as we age are just that — changes. They do not have to be given a value of “good” or “bad.” • Our ability to fulfill our dreams and goals. The only thing holding us back is ourselves. • The important role gratitude plays in everyday living. Books and gifts will be available for purchase. CHRISTMAS IN THE NORTHERN LANDS Chuck Haavik 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 Chuck Haavik is a university pastor who took up writing poetry in his 60th year. He lives with his wife, Sally, in Duluth. Haavik will read his book and talk about his fascination over many years with how the Northern world’s natural elements seem to embody many of the themes of Christmas. He will talk about the journey of beginning to write poetry on a sabbatical from work in his 60th year, finding an unexpected treasure in his love of the mysterious experience of putting one’s inner world on paper. His wife’s comment was, “I think you’re healing yourself with your poems!” He will also share about the joy of collaborating with Duluth artist Aaron Kloss as well as the many steps of learning enough about the book business to take the next step. Haavik may read a few of his other poems. A question-and-answer session will follow the reading.
