2 EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT
Originally planted decades ago, the Memory Garden
at Arneson Acres Park, 4711 W. 70th St., is in need of
an update. The Edina Garden Council has taken on the
daunting task of freshening up the area.
The Memory Garden is a tranquil space most guests
visit for peace and quiet. It is a space to get away from
the hectic world and simply enjoy the greenspace and
surrounding nature.
“We see people doing yoga, hammocking, taking pictures
and reading,” said Karen Platt, Co-Chair of the Edina
Garden Council’s Memory Garden Committee. “We see
people going there to get away and to relax and think.”
The Memory Garden long featured a large flowerbed of
peonies surrounded by trees and a wall of hedges. Two
benches in the garden allowed guests to sit and take in all
the sights, sounds and scents.
EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT
2018 Spring/Summer
The Garden Council hopes to add more benches, a
pergola and a Chinese garden-style moon door, a circular
opening in a garden wall that acts as a passageway for
walkers. Along with the structural additions, the Council
hopes to add locally grown, native flowers and plants
from other gardening organizations around Minnesota
and that the intimate feel of the garden will only increase
with the new proposed additions.
The project is estimated to cost around $100,000 with
funding coming from the Garden Club’s annual plant sale
hosted over Mother’s Day weekend, garden tours and
donations from the public. The Garden Council is looking
for more ways to raise money for the project.
The Garden Council has been in the process of updating
the Memory Garden for the last two years, but made
significant strides when they removed the peonies.
The Memory Garden Committee also connected with a
landscape architect and landscape designer.
“We’re a volunteer organization. We’re not professionals.
We’ve been learning as we go and we’ve learned a lot,”
said Platt.
“We started with thinking we’d just add a planting area,
then maybe a rock garden. Then we said maybe we need
to have someone who knows what they’re doing,” said Liz
Genovese, Co-Chair of the Memory Garden Committee.
Genovese and Platt connected with landscape designer
Tony Siebenaler-Ransom from Studio Tuske and Ben
Erickson of b.e. landscape designs.
Together, Erickson, Siebenaler-Ransom and the Garden
Council hope to receive approval from the City Council
and Parks & Recreation Department to proceed with
the project in early 2018. “I’m working with them; this
is their project,” emphasized City Horticulturist Tim
Zimmerman. “I want them to know they’re in control,
but they do have my support.”
If all goes according to plan, the walking paths inside the
garden will begin to be paved once the ground thaws in
the spring of 2018.
“I think what we can do is show people we are serious
and show them how lovely a space this is going to be
and how advantageous this will be to the community and
neighborhood,” said Platt. “We hope people will be excited
and maybe contribute toward the pergola or a bench.”
Though the timeline of the project is still flexible and
somewhat based on available funding, when finished,
those involved hope the new garden will be something
visitors will enjoy and remember for a long time.

Academy offers lessons, leagues and camps.
JUNIOR GET READY GOLF LESSONS
Ages 8-18
Get Ready Golf Lessons are basic introductory programs
for boys and girls of beginner and intermediate levels to
learn the game of golf. Lessons include the fundamentals
of the golf swing, chipping and putting skills. All classes
meet for five 50-minute lessons, once a week. Maximum
class size: 10.
Does your child need clubs? Order a set of clubs at the
time of registration and they will be ready for your child
at their first golf lesson. When young players play with
clubs that fit, they quickly develop golf swings that will
last a lifetime. We have partnered with U.S. Kids Golf to
offer their U/L – Ultralight line of clubs. U.S. Kids Golf
clubs fit players based on height, not age. The proper
club length and weight are keys to solid fundamentals.

Putting Course
It’s not miniature golf, it’s golf in miniature! Centennial
Lakes Park’s 18 manicured bent grass greens range in
length from 57 to 125 feet and are surrounded by sand
traps, ponds, boulders and planter beds.
Players use only a putter to negotiate these heavily
undulated greens. This par 51 layout is 1,662 feet in length
and takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to play.
All ages and abilities are welcome. However, due to the
difficulty of the course, it is recommended that players
be at least 8 years old.
Lawn Games
The park features championship-caliber croquet and lawn
bowling courts. These lush bent grass lawns are some of
the finest in the Midwest.
Courts may be rented by the hour, with all equipment
and written instructions included in the court fee. The
park also hosts a variety of tournaments and leagues
throughout the summer.
FAMILY LOG-ROLLING
Try out this exciting new sport rooted in the history of
the Midwest that is on the up and up! Learning to stay
atop the log improves balance, agility, concentration and
core strength. Instructors will cover front stepping, back
stepping and a variety of other ways to get you to stay on
and roll a log. Logs, trainers and instruction provided. Three
Rivers Park District staff will run this fun two-hour class.
Registration is required. Space is limited; maximum 16.
Paddleboats
For a more leisurely activity, take a lazy ride along the
waterways of Centennial Lakes on one of our sturdy four-
person paddleboats.
The park’s lake consists of large bodies of water in the north
and south ends connected by a channel that runs under
bridges, along the putting course and past the Hughes
Pavilion. Paddling by boat is a great way to see the park.
Group Outings
Organize your own tournament, or call ahead and we will
be happy to assist you with all of the details of your event.
Afterward, visit any of the great restaurants along our
lakeshore, or retire to the Hughes Pavilion where you can
have your caterer serve up a special meal. Call 952-833-
9583 for more information.
Please note that group reservations on the putting course
are only available Monday through Friday until 5 p.m. No
reservations can be made for weekends or evenings.

POTS THAT EXPOSE RICHNESS WITHIN
A THEME WORKSHOP
Mary Weisgram
Learn from functional potter and contemporary clay artist
Mary Weisgram about her use of stoneware and porcelain.
Weisgram works in a familiar pottery tradition and on a
scale useful to most people on a daily basis. Weisgram
enjoys the natural rhythm of her work style, and the way
it enables her to unconsciously personalize the forms.
For these same reasons, she works with a limited color
palette and with relatively few forms at a time. One group
of pots leads to another, changing subtly with mood and
experience, exposing the richness of variety possible
while working within a theme. Weisgram’s artwork can be
found at numerous art fairs throughout the Midwest and
at her home co-op studio CASA (Community Arts Space
Association) in Ames, Iowa. Minimum 6, Maximum 25.

have melted at temperatures around 1,800 degrees.
The piece is removed hot from the kiln, put into a metal
“reduction chamber” full of combustible material that
burns and alters the glaze, color and surface. The Raku
process is fun and hands-on and produces wonderful
lustrous and crackle glazes. All students will glaze-fire
three times in this eight-week class. Maximum 8.

BEGINNING DRAWING
Donna Webb
Artists are “See-ers.” They literally see the world around
them in a different way than the rest of us. Yet, all of us
have the ability to be “see-ers.” To learn how to draw, we
must first learn to “look” without perceptions. Students
will practice this artist’s way of looking and drawing from
observation, and experiment with a number of drawing
techniques that have been used by artists over the
centuries. This class is geared toward beginners, but is
suitable for those who wish to refresh their drawing skills,
or just need a class or assignment to get them going.

WELL-BEHAVED WOMEN SELDOM MAKE
HISTORY: TALES OF NOAH’S WIFE
AND ESTHER
Rebecca Kanner
The Edina Art Center is pleased to announce a special
reading and book signing event in celebration of the Jewish
holiday of Purim.
Saturday, April 14, 10-11 a.m. | Free Event!
Local author Rebecca Kanner was overcome with the
desire to give voice to Noah’s wife, a woman who was only
mentioned in passing in the bible. A 500-year-old man who
everyone thinks is crazy, a host of vulgar sinners, a world
on the verge of destruction. For Rebecca, this material was
irresistible. Her reimagined wife of Noah is “a powerful,
memorable character” (Publisher’s Weekly) who “proves her
strength and character as she tries to protect her family…
from the outside forces that threaten.” (Kirkus Reviews)

NONFICTION, FICTION AND THE GRAY
BETWEEN: READINGS FROM MIND GAMES,
FOAM AND UFOS AND GOVERNMENT
Richard Thieme
Saturday, May 19, 10-11 a.m. | Free Event!
Richard Thieme was advised by an assistant Deputy Director
of the National Security Agency not to discuss what they
explored in an ethics and intelligence project — unless he wrote
fiction. "Fiction is the only way you can tell the truth," he said.
Results of that advice are found in "Mind Games," a collection
of 19 short stories culled from 35 stories published since then
and the wild rollicking novel "FOAM." This nonfiction work
about the responses by the government to UFO phenomena
from the 1940s-1980s reads like a detective story, but is
a remarkable historical work of 600 pages currently in 65
university libraries and considered the gold standard of well-
documented research into an oft-marginalized subject.

Walker Art Center. Please inquire about details.
CLASS SUPPLIES
Class supply lists will be emailed to students after
class registration is complete. Our Art Center supply
store has been downsized considerably and will only
carry sumi-e supplies, pottery tools, pencils, erasers
and sketchbooks. Members receive a 10 percent
discount on art supplies. Supplies used in adult
classes are to be purchased by the student.
GIFT SHOP/GALLERY MEMBER DISCOUNTS
Sorry! The 10 percent membership discount does not
apply to artist-created work found in the Gift Shop
or purchases made in our Margaret Foss Gallery. We
support our featured artists by asking a minimal 35
percent commission on work sold. We believe it is
important that no further discount be asked of the
artist.

ADOPT-A-PARK
The City of Edina encourages individuals or groups to
participate in the Adopt-A-Park program. Participants
make a two-year commitment during which they pick up
litter at their adopted park at least twice a year. They also
notify the City of any safety hazards in the park.
The program is open to individuals, families, religious or
community service organizations, neighborhood associations
and other groups. At each adopted park, the City will provide
a sign identifying the volunteer group or individual.
For more information, call 952-826-0435.
RESERVE A PARK
The Cornelia School Park, Countryside Park, Pamela Park,
Todd Park, Walnut Ridge Park and Weber Park buildings
are available for rent for birthday parties, small reunions,
neighborhood meetings and other events.
The parks offer pleasant buildings, year-round outdoor
activities, clean restrooms and easy parking.
For more information, call the Parks & Recreation
Department at 952–826-0367.
PICNIC SHELTER RESERVATIONS
Anyone living in Edina may reserve the picnic shelter
at Rosland Park by calling the Edina Parks & Recreation
Department at 952–826-0367 after March 1. Reservations
assure space in the shelter, but not exclusive use of the park.
BICYCLE & WALKING PATHS
The City of Edina offers several scenic paths for bicycling, walking, jogging, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. To
ensure the safety and enjoyment of everyone, motorized vehicles are prohibited on the paths.
THE BREDESEN PARK BIKE PATH
The Bredesen Park bike path is two miles long and located south of Vernon Avenue and east of Gleason Road. A two-mile walking path is also available. These
paths encircle Bredesen Park, which has been developed as a nature study area. Access to the paths is on Vernon Avenue or Olinger Boulevard. The Nine Mile
Creek Regional Trail walking and biking trail goes through the southwest corner of the park, briefly combining the trails into a shared use trail, and providing
access to miles of additional walking and biking opportunities.
THE LAKE CORNELIA PATH
The 1.1-mile Lake Cornelia path encircles the northern portion of Lake Cornelia, south of the Crosstown Highway and west of the Edina Aquatic Center. Access
is on 66th Street or West Shore Drive.
NINE MILE CREEK REGIONAL TRAIL
When complete, the 15-mile Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail will span the cities of Hopkins, Minnetonka, Edina, Richfield and Bloomington and connect
to the Lake Minnetonka LRT, Minnesota River Bluffs LRT, Cedar Lake LRT, North Cedar Lake and Nokomis-Minnesota River Regional Trails as well as the
planned Minnesota River State Trail, Dakota County Big Rivers Regional Trail, Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Bloomington Visitor Center and
Fort Snelling State Park. The Edina segment of the trail will be fully complete by the spring of 2018. Much of the trail was complete and open in 2017. The
regional trail is a shared use trail and is available for walkers, runners, dog walkers, cyclists, inline skaters and other non-motorized traffic.
