The Edina Parks & Recreation Department plans to open all 12 of its outdoor ice rinks at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18, weather permitting. The 12 rinks are located at Arden Park, Cornelia School Park, Countryside Park, Creek Valley Park, Highlands Park, Lewis Park, Normandale Park, Pamela Park, Strachauer Park, Todd Park, Walnut Ridge Park and Weber Park. All locations feature warming houses and rinks for hockey and general skating. Regular season hours are 4 to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and 1 to 8 p.m. Sundays. Rinks will be open noon to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 23 to Dec. 31, noon to 4 p.m. Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day, noon to 4 p.m. New Year’s Eve and noon to 9:30 p.m. New Year’s Day. Along with the 12 outdoor rinks operated by the Parks & Recreation Department, Centennial Lakes Park and Braemar Arena have outdoor ice rinks that are operated by their respective staffs. Centennial Lakes staff hope to open their rink early in the week of the Dec. 18. Braemar Arena has had their Backyard Rink open since early November because of cooling and refrigeration systems. Braemar Arena has open skating at the Backyard Rink, but times are limited. Rinks are scheduled to remain open until the end of the day Feb. 25, but may stay open longer if the weather allows. The rinks will close when the temperatures reach negative 10 degrees Fahrenheit or if the wind chill reaches negative 15 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.
