‘Hola, Cuba!’ photos on display at Edina Art Center through
January
Edina, Minn., Jan. 17, 2018 – Come see the one-woman photo exhibit “Hola Cuba!” The 61
photographs taken by international photojournalist Barbara La Valleur will be on display through Jan.
31 at the Edina Art Center, 4701 W. 64th St.
The exhibit features photos from a 2016 trip to Cuba and highlights three distinct themes of people
and places, a clothesline series, and American cars from the 1950s and 1960s serving as taxis in
Havana. The exhibit also features a series of photographs of public art murals on Callejon de Hamel
that provide viewers with a taste of Cuban public art. Photo cards and a selection of matted photos
are available for purchase.
“Barbara’s photos are beautiful and colorful,” said Michael Frey, General Manager of the Edina Art
Center. “The exhibit has brightened our gallery this cold January winter. My Exhibitions
Coordinator, Sandra Shaugnessy, and I curated over 90 photographs out of 5,000 and chose an
array of cars, clotheslines, doorways and especially the people of Cuba to exhibit.”
La Valleur’s exhibit of Cuban photos has been displayed in Minneapolis, Fergus Falls and Evansville,
Minnesota. From June through August 2018, she will be the featured artist at the Red Door Gallery
in Wahpeton, North Dakota, where she will show a collection of over 50 photos of her life’s work,
which includes being a photojournalist for seven German newspapers.
Originally from Ashby and Battle Lake area of Minnesota, La Valleur now lives in Edina with her
husband, Arnie Bigbee, and frequently contributes to the Art Center. She was the first person to
major in Mass Communication at Minnesota State University Moorhead, and has self-published 18
photo books in the past six years. La Valleur received the 2017 Mayor’s Individual Service
Commendation, awarded to an individual for outstanding and exceptional volunteer service to the
community.
