FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City to Mark Arbor Day with Planting at Garden Park
Edina, Minn., March 21, 2018 – The City of Edina will host an Arbor Day tree planting event 10 a.m. April
27 at Garden Park, 5520 Hansen Road. The event is free and open to the public.
Guests attending the event will help City staff with the tree planting process and learn about proper tree
planting techniques. “Residents can help dig the holes if they want to. We’ll show them how to plant the trees
and some proper techniques if they don’t know how,” said City Forester Luther Overholt. “They can help fill
the holes in with soil and put a top layer of mulch down and help water the trees afterward.”
Overholt plans to plant three or four saplings this year. Each sapling planted will take about 30 years to reach
maturity.
“The parks are our green space and we expect to see healthy, green trees,” said Overholt. “With Emerald
Ash Borer coming through, we may lose thousands of trees throughout the city to the disease. We want to
plan ahead so we don’t lose all the sick trees at once.”
Edina has been a member of the Tree City USA program put on by the Arbor Day Foundation for 20 years.
More than 3,400 communities across the country were part of Tree City USA in 2017. The Tree City USA
program shares and celebrates the importance of an urban tree canopy.
To be listed as a member of Tree City USA, the City has to have tree board or department, a community
tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrate Arbor Day.
