The discussion, which focuses on municipal tree sales, will be available until May 4. It’s only a matter of time before Emerald Ash Borer begins killing the more than 1,600 Ash trees on public property in Edina. It’s estimated there are two to three times that many Ash trees on private property. To keep the tree canopy in Edina strong, the City of Edina is looking to gage resident interest in the City partnering with an organization, such as Tree Trust, to bring discounted trees to residents. Currently in cities such as St. Louis Park and Minneapolis, residents are able to purchase trees at a deeply discounted price through the program. In St. Louis Park for example, the trees cost residents $35 each and measure 4 to 6 feet. Residents can select from seven trees purposely selected for their tolerance and environmental impact. The trees can be ordered online. Residents are asked to pick up their trees from a specific site during specific dates and times. In this conversation, the City asks: • Would you be interested in purchasing a tree through this program? If so, why? • How much would you be willing to pay for a 4- to 6-foot tree through the program? • If the city were to hold a tree planting workshop, for participants to learn more about tree plantings and maintenance, would you be interested in attending? • What barriers are holding you back from planting a tree in your yard? In March, the City worked to gather feedback on bike sharing. Participants were asked would they use this service, and if so, how frequently; in what areas of the City could this service provide a benefit; and what are their concerns about this potential transportation option. Results from the conversation were compiled and presented to the City Council April 3. The feedback from the municipal tree sale discussion will be compiled and presented to the City Council May 15. In honor of Arbor Day, residents are invited to help plant trees at 10 a.m. Friday, April 27 at Garden Park. City Forester Luther Overholt will teach participants how to properly plant trees and care for them. To weigh in on a discussion, visit SpeakUpEdina.org. -30-
