Edina Aquatic Center Events Celebrate 60th Anniversary
Edina, Minn., June 27, 2018 – The Edina Aquatic Center, 4300 W. 66th St., will celebrate 60 years
as a Community Treasure with six days of special events this July. Lifeguard demonstrations,
competitions, games, poolside exercise classes and food specials are among the events scheduled July
9-14.
In 1957, Edina voters approved a $200,000 levy to build a municipal swimming pool. When it opened
in 1958, it was just that -- a large municipal pool that drew 4,000 people on hot summer days.
Over the years, that pool has been transformed into the current Edina Aquatic Center with water
slides, zip line, surf simulator, water playground for young children and a dry-land playground. On a
hot summer day, it’s still the top attraction around.
“The Aquatic Center has remained relevant for 60 years because there has been intentional
investment and re-investment in the facility over the years,” General Manager Patty McGrath said.
“New features have been added to keep the facility fresh and exciting, but the 50-meter pool has
been the heart of the Aquatic Center from the beginning. We have a little something for everyone,
and kids, parents and grandparents are all enjoying themselves and creating terrific family memories.
We really have a reputation as a safe, fun place to visit.”
Events for the anniversary celebration are free with regular admission.
• Monday, July 9: Cannonball splash competition.
• Tuesday, July 10: Waterproof temporary tattoos, diving demonstrations, poolside yoga class.
• Wednesday, July 11: Inner tube races, FlowRider competition on The Lost Wave, poolside
lawn games.
• Thursday, July 12: Rubber Ducky Grab.
• Friday, July 13: Log-rolling demonstration, kids dance DJ.
• Saturday, July 14: Jolly Pops concert, Alchemy Edina poolside workout, free Jonny Pops while
they last.
At 1 p.m. Saturday, the new name for the zero-depth water playground will be announced. The
playground for children 8 and under opened in 2017 with a pirate theme to match the rest of the
Aquatic Center, but without a special name. A social media contest earlier this summer drew dozens
of excellent name ideas.

“I’m really excited about the naming contest for the zero-depth play structure,”
McGrath said. “We have received some great suggestions and can’t wait to
announce the winner.”
Registration for competitions will be at the Aquatic Center on the day of the events. For more
details about each event, visit EdinaAquaticCenter.com or call 952-833-9560.
