City Sees Nine Retirements in the First Quarter of 2018
Edina, Minn., June 7, 2018 – The City of Edina said goodbye to nine staffers in the first quarter of 2018
who had 260 years of combined experience.
“We are very fortunate to have such a large number of staff who stay with the City during the majority of
their careers,” said HR Generalist Cassi McMayer. “Edina is a great place to work and the residents benefit
from the extensive experience that these long-term employees have and continue to bring to their work.”
First-quarter retirements included:
• Braemar Arena Building Operations Pete Saabye, 31 years (retired Jan. 8, 2018)
• Park Maintenance Supervisor Bob Prestrud: 40 years (retired Jan. 31, 2018)
• Public Works Technician Tony Leone: 35 years (retired Jan. 31, 2018)
• Accounts Payable Laurie Aasen: 26 years (retired Feb. 28, 2018)
• Paramedic/Firefighter Kelvin Engen: 23 years (retired Feb. 28, 2018)
• Public Works – Facilities Dan Johnson: 28 years (retired March 2, 2018)
• Assessing Specialist Mitzi Wicklund: 17 years (retired March 9, 2018)
• Utility Supervisor Gary Wells: 23 years (retired March 16, 2018)
• Public Service Worker – Park Maintenance Lee Swanson: 37 years (retired March 30, 2018)
A number of things have changed over the years; Prestrud remembers the stark differences.
“It took strong arms just to steer the equipment left and right. We’ve gone from equipment that was almost
prehistoric to equipment that is state of the art,” he said. “Today, we’ve got people with four-year degrees in
areas like turf management. We’ve developed smarter ways of doing things. We’ve gone from the days of
dinosaurs to the new Millennials.”
