Historically, the KKK used terrorism – both physical assault and murder – against groups or individuals whom they opposed. The guillotine, called the “National Razor,” became the symbol of the Reign. This is a book presentation and Q&A with Roma Calatayud-Stocks, award- winning author and composer. Roma will discuss the artistic and musical contributions of some of the greatest composers and conductors, the rise of Nazism, the role of art in the public arena, and Beethoven’s legacy in the early 1930s. In A Symphony of Rivals, a historical novel set in Germany, Austria, Italy and the United States, the protagonist, Alejandra Morrison, faces more than a battle of the sexes in her quest to become a symphonic conductor in a male-dominated field. She is also up against fascist policies and the upheaval in Europe in the years leading up to World War II. With a degree in music from the University of Minnesota and post-graduate studies in creative writing from the University of St. Thomas, as well as working for Twin Cities’ arts organizations for the last 20 years, Roma’s historical novel provides a window to locations across the world, cultural artistic contributions, while also addressing poignant issues, politics of the era and history. This is a talk and Q&A with Amy Hallberg, author, life coach and writing mentor, about her experience writing German Awakening: Tales from an American Life. This book was 40 years in the making, with essential lessons about otherness and belonging. A small-town teacher’s child desperate for a fresh start, Amy traveled to West Germany as an exchange student in 1987, living with host parents whose childhoods were lost in the war. The experience forever changed the way she viewed the world, including her American culture. She spent the next three decades exploring and teaching German as a way of decoding life, language, politics and especially herself. Amy will talk about non-native language exploration as a way of re-visioning our world perspective, as well as how she sees German poets as heroes for today. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. 76 EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT Edina Art Center | LITERARY ARTS SEIZE YOUR LIFE: HOW TO CARPE DIEM EVERY DAY Jasmine Stringer 10-11 a.m. Saturday, April 13 | Free Event! In her presentation and Q&A, Christine Bauer, author of Those Three Words: A Birth Mother’s Story of Choice, Chance & Motherhood, will address how she faced one of the most wrenching and emotional decisions a woman must confront and how her decision impacted her life. Bauer was just 18 years old and a few weeks into her freshman year of college when she heard those three words: “You are pregnant.” She was devastated, and she had excruciating decisions to make during a time when “out of wedlock” births were considered shameful and wrong, and our nation was witnessing violence against pro-choice options. Bauer will also discuss the power of faith, family and love in helping her through life’s peaks and valleys, and the power and healing of storytelling. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. SLIDER’S SON Rebecca Fjelland Davis 10-11 a.m. Saturday, March 30 | Free Event Rebecca Fjelland Davis heard a story about a murder decades ago in North Dakota. Her source was a friend in his eighties who found the body with his dad, the local sheriff. The story was so gripping that Becky asked if she could write a nonfiction story about it. When she was well into the writing process, the friend decided he didn’t want his identity revealed, and asked that she turn the book into fiction and change all the identifiable details. No longer able to tell “what really happened,” Becky was faced with creating a place and characters and a plot worthy of a novel. “When you write nonfiction, you get to convey what really happened, and try hard to make it gripping. But when you write fiction, it has to make sense and be even more believable, oddly enough. You can’t lean on “well, that’s how it happened in real life.” Becky created a protagonist that bore only slight resemblance to her friend, and took her friend’s stories and notched them up with the question, “What if?” That changed some anecdotes into the novel Slider’s Son that won the Midwest Book Award for Young Adult fiction. Join Becky as she talks about the process of digging and imagining to make shards of reality into a story that stands up to novel-reading scrutiny. 772019 SPRING/SUMMER ACTIVITIES DIRECTORY Edina Art Center | LITERARY ARTS FACES DON’T LIE: THE SCIENCE OF EXPRESSIONS APPLIED TO PORTRAITS & SELF-PORTRAITS ALIKE Dan Hill 10-11 a.m. Saturday, June 8 | Free Event! With more facial muscles than any other species on Earth, there’s nothing more expressive of emotions than people’s faces. Whether you’re an artist doing figurative painting, a photographer or somebody intrigued to learn how to read the feelings of others in social situations or in watching a movie or the national news on TV, here’s your opportunity to be introduced to the science of facial coding. Twenty-three facial expressions correspond to seven core emotions: happiness, surprise, anger, fear, sadness, disgust and contempt. The author will draw on examples from Hollywood, rock stars, athletes, politicians and CEOs to Rembrandt, Kahlo, da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and posted selfies he’s decoded for Cosmopolitan magazine. As a researcher, Dan has done work for over 50 percent of the world’s top 100 companies and been a pundit for CNN, Fox, MSNBC, The New York Times, Reuters and other media outlets regarding the emotional displays of U.S. presidential candidates. He also writes a blog called “Faces of the Week.” Copies of Dan’s latest book in print, Famous Faces Decoded, will be available for purchase and signing following the Q & A that concludes his talk. Dan will also preview his upcoming book First Blush: People’s Intuitive Reactions to Famous Art. The average art museumgoer will look at any specific, given painting or other artwork for typically four seconds. In a new study, Dan used eye tracking and facial coding to capture and quantify participants’ sensory and emotional responses to 88 famous artworks. 78 EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT Edina Art Center ART CLASS REGISTRATION AND POLICIES Register online today! 952-903-5780 EdinaArtCenter.com Visit us in person at the Edina Art Center, 4701 W. 64th St, Edina, MN 55435.
