Championship 18 Golf Course Opens This Month
Inaugural Tournament Sells Out
As Buzz Builds Around Braemar
Golf Course
Excitement is building as the
new Championship 18 course
at Braemar Golf Course opens
later this month, marking the
first new public 18-hole course
to open in the state in more
than a decade.
The First FORE, the course’s
inaugural tournament May 17,
sold out its 144 spots within 90 minutes.
To ensure she got a slot, Pacy Erck had her
cellphone ready and checked the tournament
sales link repeatedly starting just before tickets
went on sale. She was first to register.
“I’m excited,” said Erck, a Braemar Golf
Association board member who previewed the
course in 2018 to assist with sign placement,
path markers and other preparations. “I already
love this course.”
Braemar Golf Course General Manager Joe
Abood, who oversaw the transformation of
the Championship 18, expects golfers from
around the Twin Cities and the state to flock to
Braemar this spring and summer. Designed to
be Minnesota’s premier public golf course, the
Championship 18 features open fairways, six
tee boxes for players of every ability, advanced
bunker designs, superior drainage for inclement
weather and spectacular views. The $7.5 million
project included restoring oak savannah, adding
wetlands and planting hundreds of trees.
“It’s so beautifully built for every type of player,”
said Erck, who has been involved with Braemar
Golf Course in a variety of ways since it opened
in 1964.

The grand opening events that begin May 15
also feature media previews, special playing time
for Braemar league members and a live KFAN-
FM radio broadcast.
Those who didn’t get a spot in the First FORE
can still join the festivities by registering for
the post-tournament celebration 6-8 p.m. May
17 on the new Braemar Courtyard next to the
course. The $20 tickets include food, games, live
music and a raffle. Check Braemar Golf Course’s
Facebook page for ticket details.
Public tee times on the new course begin May
18. Edina residents with Player’s Cards can
book tee times eight days in advance and at a
discount.
The opening of the Championship 18 is the
final piece in making Braemar Golf Course a
complete year-round experience for golfers.
Braemar now offers that 18-hole course, the
Academy 9 Par 3 course, an enlarged putting
green, a new chipping and bunker practice
space, remodeled pro shop, Red River Kitchen
restaurant, the Courtyard for games and events,
and Braemar Golf Dome for practice in the off-
season.

book tee times at BraemarGolf.com.
The new Championship 18 combines a picturesque golf course with natural areas, including wetlands and restored oak savannah.

Race & Equity Coordinator Heidi Lee came to
the United States from the Philippines when she
was just 5 years old. From her experiences as a
young child to adulthood, she grew up seeing
the impacts on her parents and family while
trying to pursue the American Dream.
Lee wants to make sure people have equitable
opportunities and access to flourish.

Lee Hopes to Start with Relationships

“It can start with a conversation,” said Lee,
who started work for the City March 18. “Let’s
work together to move the needle forward.
It doesn’t need to be a huge movement,
because it’s going to take time. But let’s meet,
and let’s talk.”
Relationships are very important to Lee, and
they will be an important part of her work
to ensure race and equity principles are
emphasized as part of Edina’s culture and
standard operating procedures.
Lee brings to the job prior equity experience
with the Saint Paul School District as Project
Coordinator with the Office of Equity, where
she worked with District departments to provide
equity plan support and implementation. She
also coordinated and facilitated district-wide
racial equity training. During a portion of that
time, Lee also took part in the Administrative
Intern Residency, where she provided racial
equity coaching and support to leadership.
“Heidi stood out to us because of the variety
of her race and equity experience,” said City
Manager Scott Neal. “People here were really
impressed with Heidi, with her enthusiasm for
the work and her ability to translate it from
a school setting to local government. We’re
excited to have her on board and look forward
to developing the position together.”
As Race & Equity Coordinator, Lee will focus on
serving as an equity liaison to the public, staff
and elected and appointed officials. Her duties
also include partnering with staff throughout
the organization to develop and provide
community outreach to advance the City’s race
and equity goals.
“I’m grateful that I had opportunities in Saint
Paul that allowed me to get this opportunity
in Edina,” said Lee. “I want to be able to help
and support what transformation looks like
in a different area. Just to be able to create
is huge.”

Edina Liquor has started free delivery to homes
and businesses in the city.
Unlike a lot of delivery services, this one is
entirely in house. Edina Liquor employees will
process, fill and deliver the orders.
“This is a service we are offering to residents
and we hope they take advantage of it,”
said Josh Furbish, General Manager of Liquor
Operations.
How does it work?
Customers go to EdinaLiquor.com and set up
an account similar to other business websites.
Then, they select items, choose delivery or
in-store pickup, and pay. Certain items such
as limited-release products will not be listed
on the website. Edina Liquor expects to add
products regularly.
How long does delivery take?
Edina Liquor is aiming for two-hour delivery
for orders placed before or during the delivery
windows. Furbish hopes most deliveries will be
within one hour. In-store pickup orders will be
ready in similar time frames.
When can I get delivery?
Delivery hours are 3 to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday;
noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m.
Sunday.
Where can I get liquor delivered?
Only to homes or businesses in Edina. No
deliveries will be made to parks or vehicles.
How much does it cost?
Delivery is free. The minimum order is $35.
Do I tip the driver?
No. “As City employees, we cannot accept tips,”
Furbish said.
What are the rules?
The person who places the order must be the
one who receives it. You must show the driver
your ID at delivery. More rules and details are at
EdinaLiquor.com.
Can I get a really big order delivered to my
house?
If you are ordering for a large event, please call
Edina Liquor or come to a store. In addition to
working with you on your order, staff might be
able to arrange a special delivery time.
For more information, visit EdinaLiquor.com or call

A vision for the future of downtown Edina has
been set.
The 50th & France District is known throughout
the metropolitan area as an upscale shopping
and dining destination. But the area has more
than great shopping; the Edina side of France
Avenue is home to five multifamily residential
uses and 95 businesses, including professional
service providers, salons and spas and a movie
theater.
50th & France has been a commercial activity
center since the early 1900s. Over the years, it
has constantly changed and adapted in order
to remain current, vibrant and successful.
Recognizing that 50th & France must
continue to evolve to meet the demands of
the community in the future, the City Council
authorized a small area plan for the District.
According to the plan, approved by the City
Council last month, future improvements in
the area should strengthen the connection
to surrounding neighborhoods, buildings
should maintain an upscale aesthetic and
traditional “main street” experience and
increased density should be considered.
Range of housing and commercial uses; public
realm spaces; urban design; sustainability;
and access, parking and movement are also
addressed as part of the plan.
The small area plan was completed as part of
the City’s Comprehensive Plan Update. The City
Council will hold a public hearing on the draft
Comprehensive Plan May 7.
In other business last month, the Council took
several actions related to Parks & Recreation:
• Amended the City code to allow the City
Forester to control Emerald Ash Borer.
Previously, the City Code referenced only
Dutch elm and oak wilt diseases. The
amendment to the City Code includes
a broader definition of “tree and plant
pests” and includes ash on the list of
trees that are not defined as “protected”
during a redevelopment.
• Approved the purchase of new
playground equipment at Arden Park,
5230 Minnehaha Blvd. The playground
should be installed by August or
September.
• Approved a project to remove asphalt
pathway and curbing at Centennial Lakes
Park, 7499 France Ave., and replace it
with a colored concrete pathway in the
central area of the park alongside the
putting course.
• Approved the initial phase of
construction of a tranquility garden at
Arneson Acres Park, 4711 W. 70th St.
The project, planned and funded by the
Edina Garden Council, includes paver
walkways, trap rock paths and sitting
areas with large boulders.
The City Council will next meet 7 p.m. May 7 and 21
in the Council Chambers of Edina City Hall, 4801 W.
50th St. For more information, visit EdinaMN.gov.
