Open House on Plans for Future of Southdale District Set for Oct. 11
Edina, Minn., Sept. 19, 2018 – Learn about the draft plans for the future of the Southdale area
and give your input during an open house Thursday, Oct. 11.
The residents and business owners who make up the Greater Southdale District Plan working group
will hold the open house from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Edina Public Works & Park Maintenance
Facility, 7450 Metro Blvd. People can drop in anytime during the event to learn more, ask questions
or give feedback.
The working group has developed a draft plan that establishes a vision and aspirations for the
district. It addresses land use, transportation, parks, open space, sustainability, design, economic
vitality and competitiveness, district services and facilities. The Southdale District is defined as the
land between Minnesota Highway 62 and Interstate Highway 494 from the Richfield border on the
east to about two blocks west of France Avenue. The group also has developed a draft of Design
Experience Guidelines for topics such as district design, experience and identity; transitions to
adjacent neighborhoods and uses; open space; view corridors; building form and architecture.
Among the goals are to make the area more walkable and family friendly while maintaining the
diversity of what is already there, from high-end medical and retail to commercial space and housing.
The 124-page draft Greater Southdale Area District Plan and the 64-page draft Design Experience
Guidelines can be viewed at EdinaMN.gov/smallareaplans.
The District Plan will become part of the 2018 Comprehensive Plan Update, which guides future
development in the city.
