FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Four Sworn In as Edina’s Newest Paramedic/Firefighters
Edina, Minn., March 13, 2019 – Tyler Haege, Thomas Hegge, Ivan Mazurkiewicz and Daniel Schlick took
the oath of office at Edina City Hall and officially joined the Edina Fire Department as Paramedic/Firefighters
Monday, March 11.
Prior to joining the Edina Fire Department, Haege, who holds an associate degree from Inver Hills
Community Collee and attended the Northern Dakota Training Academy, worked as a Firefighter/EMT for
the Eagan Fire Department and as a Paramedic with Ridgeview Ambulance.
Haege, given badge No. 152, said he first gained interest in fire and EMS service as a paid-on-call firefighter.
“I love being able to work on a team and help people in a time of need,” he said. “I’m very thankful to be able
to be part of team Edina and honored to be able to serve the city.”
Hegge, given badge No. 100, served as a Firefighter/Paramedic in Virginia, Minnesota, prior to joining the Edina
Fire Department. He worked as an EMT at Essenita Health and Lakes Regions EMS. After working in various
building trades for 15 years, Hegge took a class for first responders to assist with future jobsite injuries. On
his first day of EMT school, he said he knew he was going to change his career path.
“I loved what I was learning immediately,” said Hegge. “I realized that I could have the greatest impact by
serving as a Paramedic/Firefighter.”
Mazurkiewicz, given badge No. 99, holds two associate degrees: one in Fire Technology & Administration
from Lake Superior College in Duluth, Minnesota, and the other in Paramedic Science from Century College
in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. His work history includes time as a Paramedic Supervisor with Cannon Falls
Ambulance and as a Paramedic with Allina Health Medical Transportation.
Mazurkiewicz said he’s wanted to be a Paramedic/Firefighter his whole life, always feeling a sense of duty to
his friends, family and community. “This is the place for me,” he said. “I am extremely excited for this
opportunity and will serve the community and my coworkers to the best of my ability.”
Schlick, given badge No. 153, holds two associate degrees: one in Acute Care Paramedic from Ridgewater
College in Willmar, Minnesota, and one in Fire Science Technology from Hennepin Technical College in Eden
Prairie. For nearly a decade, Schlick has worked as a Paramedic or Firefighter with various departments and
ambulance services. Most recently, he worked with North Memorial Air Care as a Critical Care Flight
Paramedic.
The four positions were added after a 2017 public safety staffing study completed by Novak Consulting
determined additional staff was needed with the increased call load. For more information on the Edina Fire
