City of Edina Emergency Response Now Using Smart911
Edina, Minn., April 11, 2019 – The Edina 911 Emergency Communication Center now offers a free,
new service called Smart911 to help 911 Dispatchers and first responders when someone calls 911.
When a person calls 911, information voluntarily entered by residents in Smart911 is sent to 911 call centers
and emergency response. Smart911 then provides the caller’s address, medical information, entry details,
emergency contacts and more.
“This allows residents to provide additional details about themselves or others in their family into the secure
Smart911 database so that in the event they call 911 from one their verified numbers, their safety profile will
automatically pop up for the 911 dispatcher,” said Edina PSAP Manager Tony Martin. “The resident selects
what information they would like to put in -- as little or as much as they would like. This is especially useful if
they are calling from a cell phone. They can provide their home address, or other frequent addresses, in their
profile which will show up to 911 dispatchers to help locate them or to confirm their address.”
Martin says this service is useful for everyone. It is nationally used so it’s useful for those who travel
frequently. He also encourages those who only use cell phones, have children home alone at times, or have
family members with medical or special needs to enter information. Smart911 is secure and allows you to
store any critical care and emergency rescue information.
Smart911 also has emergency alert notifications, sometimes referred to as “reverse 911.” Alerts are sent
regarding emergencies, missing people or emergency drills. When users fill out their Smart911 profile, they
can then select their preferences for emergency alert notifications as well.
