Home on Malibu Drive Destroyed by Fire
Edina, Minn., April 2, 2019 – The Edina Fire Department was called to the 4900 block of Malibu Drive 4:39
p.m. Sunday, March 3, after a passerby reported flames coming from a home’s roof.
The family was home at the time of the fire, but was able to quickly escape after being alerted to the fire. The
fire was originally contained to the attic space of the house, giving no indication to those inside the home that
it was on fire.
The fire quickly consumed the roof of the house, rendering interior firefighting operations too dangerous. The
fire was extinguished using ladder trucks from Edina and Hopkins, as well as large exterior ground fire attack
lines. A backhoe was brought in once the fire was extinguished to ensure no hotspots would reignite the fire.
The house sustained significant damage and is likely a total loss.
There were no injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
“The most important thing is that the family was able to get out safely,” said Fire Inspector Brian Hanrahan.
During the three-alarm fire, the Edina Fire Department received mutual aid from the Bloomington, Hopkins,
Eden Prairie, Excelsior, Minnetonka, Richfield and St. Louis Park fire departments. Hennepin County Medical
Center was also on scene.
