Fire Damages Edina Home on Xerxes Avenue
Edina, Minn., March 26, 2019 – The Edina Fire Department was called to the 5800 block of Xerxes
Avenue South 1:27 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, after one of the residents reported a fire.
Firefighters arrived to a working fire in the kitchen, but were able to extinguish it with water from Fire Engine
83. The fire was contained to the kitchen, where most of the fire and heat damage occurred. However, there
was smoke damage throughout the main floor of the house and water damage to the basement. There were
no injuries.
“The residents immediately left the home, then called 911, which is exactly what is recommended,” said Fire
Inspector Brian Hanrahan. “Also, unattended cooking is the No. 1 cause of fires, and it’s something that’s can
be prevented.”
Here are some tips to prevent cooking fires:
Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the stove or oven.
Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food.
If you are simmering, baking or roasting food, check it regularly; remain in the kitchen while food is
cooking; and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
Keep anything that can catch fire -- oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains --
away from your stovetop.
The Edina Fire Department received mutual aid from the Hopkins, St. Louis Park and Richfield Fire
departments. Hennepin County Medical Center was also on scene.
