City Council seeks resident input on recycling frequency
Edina, Minn., March 26, 2019 – The City wants to hear residents’ opinions on the frequency of recycling
collection in Edina.
The contract with the City’s current recycling vendor, Republic Services, expires Dec. 31, 2019, which creates
an opportunity for the City to consider options, including the frequency of collection.
Currently, recycling is collected biweekly in Edina from all single-family houses, townhouses and multi-family
homes of eight units or less. A portion of recycling costs are subsidized from state taxes passed through
Hennepin County. The remainder of the cost is paid quarterly by residents as a recycling service charge on
City utility bills.
The City is considering having recycling picked up weekly in an effort to capture recyclable material that ends
up in the trash and provide better service to residents. Residents have reported being confused about which
week to put out recyclables, and frustrations with having to store recyclables for two additional weeks if they
miss collection due to being out of town or for some other reason. Weekly collection would alleviate both of
those concerns.
In 2020, the cost of bi-weekly recycling pick-up would be $3.59 per month; the cost of weekly recycling pick-
up would be $6.47. City-wide organics collection begins in 2020 at a cost of about $5.50 per month.
The City has hired a professional surveying firm to conduct a phone survey of a statistically valid sample of the
population to get feedback. Residents are also encouraged to join the conversation online at
www.BetterTogetherEdina.org/Recycling.
The Council will consider feedback from both sources when making the final decision at its May 7 meeting.
The new recycling contract will take place beginning Jan. 1, 2020.
“I look forward to hearing what people have to say, whether to carry on with biweekly pickup or get the
recycling trucks to you more often,” said Recycling Coordinator Solvei Wilmot.
