Help Plant Trees at Countryside Park for Arbor Day
Edina, Minn., April 18, 2019 – Come help plant new trees during the City of Edina’s annual Arbor
Day celebration 10 a.m. Friday, April 26, at Countryside Park.
City Forester Luther Overholt will lead participants in the planting of nine new trees at the park,
6240 Tracy Ave. S. The event is free and open to everyone. Overholt recommends those planning to
participate bring gloves and dress for kneeling in dirt. Observers are welcome as well.
The new trees will be planted as pre-emptive replacements for existing Ash trees that are expected
to die from the invasive Emerald Ash Borer. Overholt has been planting trees in other City parks for
the same purpose. Emerald Ash Borer was first found in Edina in April 2018.
“I’ve been taking new trees and planting them adjacent to existing, mature Ash trees,” Luther said.
“That way, they benefit from the shade from the Ash trees for the next couple of years until the Ash
trees eventually end up dying. The new replacement trees have a greater chance at surviving and
growing to be big just like the ash trees they’re replacing.”
In addition to learning about proper tree-planting techniques, Arbor Day attendees can ask questions
about Emerald Ash Borer or any other tree topics.
For more information, contact Overholt at LOverholt@EdinaMN.gov or 952-826-0308.
