HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-07-19 Wk Session MINUTES OF THE WORK SESSION OF THE EDINA CITY COUNCIL HELD AT CITY HALL JULY 19,2011 5:30 P.M. Mayor Hovland called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. in the Community Room of City Hall.Answering rollcall were Members Bennett, Brindle, Sprague, Swenson and Mayor Hovland. Staff attending the meeting included: Jennifer Bennerotte, Communications & Marketing Director; Debra Mangen, City Clerk; Scott Neal, City Manager; Ceil Smith, Assistant to the City Manager; and Cary Teague, Planning Director. Proponents of an indoor turf/field recreation facility(sportsdome) included: Shannon Rusk, Paige Rickert, Mark Bigelbach and Pat Barrett. Mayor Hovland stated the purpose of the meeting was to receive information from persons advocating for an indoor sportsdome in the City of Edina. Shannon Rusk and Paige Rickert presented their ideas for development of a seasonal sportsdome. The vision presented was of a facility that could accommodate youth athletic associations, walkers, youth recreation programs, adult sports leagues, Edina Public Schools events such as graduations and pep fests, fundraisers and corporate events. The proposed dome would be approximately 108,000 square feet in size and would operate for 26 weeks each year. Ms. Rusk outlined potential benefits and reviewed existing facilities compared to those of surrounding communities. Mr. Rickert reviewed the various locations that have reviewed as potential sites for the sportsdome, stating pros and cons for each site. The Council asked questions of the presenters and discussed the perceived need for such a facility in Edina. The Council requested that City staff complete a facilities inventory of current facilities to determine the City's current needs. It concurrently directed the Park Board to study the feasibility of a sports dome including the issues of location and ownership. Respectfully submitted, Debra A.
