RESOLUTION OF CONDOLENCE
JAMES VAN VALKENBURG
WHEREAS, James Van Valkenburg passed away suddenly on Saturday, May 25, 2013; and
WHEREAS, James Van Valkenburg served as a member of the Edina Zoning Board of Appeals
from 1966 to 1973; and
WHEREAS, James Van Valkenburg served as an Village Trustee for Edina from 1960 to 1974;
and
WHEREAS, James Van Valkenburg served as the first Mayor of the City of Edina from 1975
to 1980; and
WHEREAS, James Van Valkenburg was a Charter Board Member of the Edina Community
Foundation in 1977; serving as president and treasurer during his tenure; and
WHEREAS, James Van Valkenburg was a 40-year leader of the Edina Crime Prevention Fund;
and
WHEREAS, James Van Valkenburg was appointed to the Edina Art Center Board in 1982,
serving for 27 years, chairing the Board in 2009; and
WHEREAS, James Van Valkenburg served with great conviction, enthusiasm and honor,
often communicating through letters with his many colleagues.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Edina City Council hereby extends its heartfelt
sympathy to James Van Valkenburg's family members in their loss, rdcognizing further that his
death is a distinct loss to the City in which he lived, served and won deep affection and respect.
