4 EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT
The City of Edina wants to ensure all residents and those
who attend school here have an opportunity to participate
in classes and activities for fun and education.
To help make that happen, all City Parks & Recreation
programs featured in this guide accept the Connect Card, a
card available through a program administered by the Edina
Community Foundation and made possible in part through
a grant from the Walser Foundation.
What is the Connect Card?
The Connect Card gives residents in financial hardship
a dignified way to access scholarship dollars for various
activities. It’s a one-stop process, with the card accepted
for City programs and also for the Southdale YMCA, Edina
Basketball Association, Edina Baseball Association, Edina
Football Association and Edina Girls Athletic Association.
More community programs could be added in the future.
What does it cover?
Free enrollment or a variety of discounts are available,
based on each association’s standards.
Currently, the card gives each family $300 per year for
Parks & Recreation programs, which include everything
from Edina Art Center classes to Playground Programs to
Edina Aquatic Center season passes.
Using that credit does not lower the amount available for
another partner program. We encourage people to use the
benefits from all Connect Card partners.
See details about the benefits from each partner online at
EdinaChallenge.org; click on “Ready Set Connect.”
Who is eligible?
Any child whose family situation qualifies them for free
or reduced-price meals at schools or any person whose
financial hardship prevents full payment of a program. This
can apply to people with a short-term financial crisis such
as medical expenses.
How do I apply?
You can apply online at EdinaChallenge.org under the
“Ready Set Connect” section or download an application,
available in English, Somali and Spanish, and submit it.
People also can call 952-833-9573 to obtain an application.
How long does it take to be approved?
It usually takes less than a week for an application to be
processed. You will receive a letter and your card in the mail.
Does everyone see my financial information?
No. Only one or two people will view your application
information to verify it and issue you the Connect Card.
The programs where you use the card to enroll will have no
details about your financial situation.
If I have a card, how do I register?
Card holders can register for most programs in this guide by
calling 952-826-0367.

programs in the community. To learn more about this

ART AS MEDITATION: MANDALAS
All Skill Levels
Holly Stone
What is intuitive art? In the process of creating art, we can
often achieve a quiet, focused “flow” state. A combination
of fun “brain training” exercises designed to enhance the
focused state and short meditations will allow students to
more readily find an intuitive approach to their practice.
This session will look at the ancient symbol of the mandala
and color symbolism — seen in many cultures — and use it
as a starting point for a personal project. The instructor
brings a wealth of experience to share after spending
15 months in India studying sacred Tibetan Thangka
painting and meditation techniques. Bring favorite art
supplies and ideas for projects of your own. Maximum 12.

RAKU TECHNIQUES AND FIRING
All Skill Levels
Caitlin Dowling
Join this class to make, glaze and fire Raku pottery. Raku
is a firing process developed in 16th century Japan for the
Japanese tea ceremony. Bisque pots are glazed, dried and
fired in the kiln where they remain until the glazes have
melted at temperatures around 1,800 degrees. The piece
is removed hot from the kiln, put into a metal “reduction
chamber” full of combustible material that burns and
alters the glaze, color and surface. The Raku process is
fun and hands-on and produces wonderful lustrous and
crackle glazes. Maximum 12.

GERMAN AWAKENING: TALES FROM AN
AMERICAN LIFE
Amy Hallberg
10-11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 14 | Free Event!
A talk and question-and-
answer session with Amy
Hallberg, author, life coach
and writing mentor, about her
experience writing German
Awakening: Tales from an
American Life. This was a
book 40 years in the making,
with essential lessons about
otherness and belonging.
A small-town teacher’s kid
desperate for a fresh start,
Amy Hallberg traveled to
West Germany as an exchange student in 1987, living
with host parents whose childhoods were lost in the war.
The experience forever changed the way she viewed the
world, including her American culture. She spent the next
three decades exploring and teaching German as a way
of decoding life, language, politics and especially herself.
Amy will talk about non-native language exploration as a
way of re-visioning our world perspective, as well as how
she sees German poets as heroes for today.
IVORY LUST
Colin Nelson
10-11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 12 | Free Event!
Colin Nelson was introduced
to his first mystery story
when his grandma gave
him a copy of The Hound
of the Baskervilles. He’s
been hooked ever since. He
worked as a criminal lawyer
for over 40 years. Ivory Lust
is his eighth book, a mystery/
suspense story set in South
Africa. In Colin’s free time, he
plays the saxophone in a jazz
group and a Bob Dylan tribute
band.
Ivory Lust tells the story of Pete Chandler, an investigator
for the U.S. Export/Import Bank, travels to South Africa
with his daughter, hoping to heal their relationship. He’s
also on assignment to solve a murder case connected to
the bank. Arriving in Cape Town, his daughter is almost
killed during a second murder. That throws Pete into a
dangerous quest. It leads them across South Africa to a
wild game reserve. Clues point to an international ivory
trafficking network. Pete’s investigation traps him between
powerful forces that don’t want him to succeed. When he
refuses to give up, Pete and his daughter become targets
of the criminals who will do anything to eliminate the two.

from her award-winning novel,
The Witness Tree.
The Witness Tree tells the story of a woman who gets
tangled in events that occur after a strange tree,
supposedly cursed, is cut down before its time. Vivid
descriptions of small town bonds, young love, racism and
the paths young women will take to follow their dreams
intertwine at the foot of the tree, whose secrets are
darker and deeper than anyone in the town of Crestview,
Iowa, suspect.
A LIFE LIVED MEDIUM: A PSYCHIC’S
JOURNEY FROM FEARFUL TO
ALMOST FEARLESS
Jennifer Bierma
10-11 a.m., Saturday, December 14 | Free Event!
Jennifer Bierma is an author,
psychic and light worker. She
is best known for her memoir,
A Life Lived Medium.
Jennifer shares how her
journey through fear has given
her life more purpose and has
challenged others to embrace
their differences and live more
authentically.
Jennifer has been using her
psychic gifts to assist people in
their healing process since the
age of 19. She believes that sharing her story with honesty
and vulnerability gives others a sense of permission to do
the same. At this event, she will share tools to assist you
in your own fear journey and challenge you to open your
mind to assistance outside of yourself.
A Life Lived Medium is an honest and unapologetic
spiritual memoir that smashes through the barriers
created by what society deems normal and the fear that
it places on individuals as they carry out their life purpose
to accept who they were born to be.

Nicole Lovald

and how yoga helped her find
her way back home, to herself.
While working her way up
the corporate ladder, Nicole
found herself stressed to the max. She experienced her
breaking point through a health crisis while her husband
was deployed to Iraq and she was learning to single
parent their 2-year-old son. Luckily, she found herself
on a yoga mat and learned how to quiet her mind — and
her worries — for the first time. She now shares what she
learned through yoga and reclaiming her health with
others so that they can also experience greater peace.
In her presentation, Nicole will share real-life examples
and strategies for managing stress, even during the most
challenging of times.

COLLAPSE: DREAMING ANOTHER WORLD
Medora Woods
10-11 a.m., Saturday, April 11, Free Event!
Medora Woods is a retired Jungian psychoanalyst. She
has also been a high school English teacher, a banker and
a lawyer in private practice.
Enjoy a talk and question-
and-answer session with a
Jungian psychoanalyst and
author about her recently
published book: Collapse:
Dreaming Another World.
As a psychoanalyst, she
understands events in the
world as symbolic. Like many in
Minneapolis, she experienced
the collapse of I-35W bridge
over the Mississippi River in
Minneapolis as both a personal
trauma and a trauma for her community. Since then, she
has explored the symbolic message of that event for her
community and the larger community of which we are all
a part. Her published writings about the collapse have
been incorporated into the book.
Collapse: Dreaming Another World explores the possibility
that we are at a critical moment when the structures
of our shared world are collapsing. This collapse is the
necessary condition for the emergence of a world in
which care for all beings guide humanity into an unknown
future, one which we all have the power to create.
RAISING WILL: SURVIVING THE
BRILLIANCE AND BLUES OF ADHD
Katherine Quie
10-11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 8 | Free Event!
Katherine Quie is a child
psychologist, author, speaker
and recent founder of
ADHD&U.
Be part of a talk and question-
and-answer session with
author and child psychologist
Katherine Quie about her
memoir and newly founded
cause, ADHD&U. Raising
Will is a heartfelt, humbling
memoir written by a Texan-
turned-Minnesotan mother
and child psychologist. Her heart breaks for Will when
he is repeatedly banned from Fun Friday in first grade
shortly after he is diagnosed with ADHD. The family zig-
zags through an obstacle course of therapies, medication
side effects, tutoring and sleepless nights, while shining a
light on Will’s inherent strength – blues guitar. Katherine
brings you into her private world as she struggles to make
sense of ADHD, encounters saintly characters along the
way, and gains compassion for others in similar worlds.
Katherine started ADHD&U in 2018. Will had just left for
college and she had time to reflect on the next chapter
in her life. Given Katherine’s concern about the rise in
ADHD and desire to help those impacted, she developed
ADHD&U as a platform to spread the word on how to help.
A DEATH IN LIONEL’S WOODS
Christine Husom
10-11 a.m., Saturday, March 14 | Free Event!

session by Christine Husom,
a national best-selling author
who served with the Wright
County Sheriff’s Office. She
pens the Winnebago County
Mysteries and the Snow
Globe Shop Mysteries where
bad guys demonstrate not
everyone is “Minnesota nice.”
A Death in Lionel’s Woods
begins when a woman’s
emaciated body is found in a
hunter’s woods Sgt. Corinne Aleckson is coaxed back into
the field to assist Detective Smoke Dawes on the case.
It seems the only hope for identifying the woman lies in
a photo that was buried with bags of money under her
body. Aleckson and Dawes plunge into the investigation
that takes them into the world of human smugglers and
traffickers, unexpectedly close to home. All the while,
they are working to uncover the identity of someone who
is leaving Corky anonymous messages and pulling pranks
at her house. An unpredictable roller coaster ride to the
electrifying end.
